I am a newb to major chassis work. But I am wanting to see about stretching a 1988 YJ to LJ dimensions and keep it leaf sprung. Where would be a good spot to lengthen the chassis? Behind the door? Any ideas would be helpful.

Doesn't the LJ have longer dimensions behind the door and behind the rear fender too?

If you are trying to fit an LJ tub my guess is you would be time and money ahead to start with an LJ or a donor chassis/tub and make it leaf sprung.

Are you thinking of just stretching it similar to a CJ6 instead?

I'm sure this has been done before.

This is my build and how I did mine. I haven’t updated the thread in a while basically the same expect has an 6.0 now.

Its not hard and has gotten really easy now with parts from motobilt and Genright. Theres a Facebook group “yj unlimited builds” for inspiration.

Just picked up a new tub yesterday getting ready to start on new version. I’ll be using motobilt inner rear fenders and floor stretch and Genright makes a piece for the tub. I’m going lower with link coilovers and one tons and 40’s. Will probably build a new frame unless I can find a decent donor.

Search a bit bro... there's at least two YJ unlimited builds and a CJ going on currently here right now.

Can't beat the motobilt back half frame kits for thier price.

If you're staying leafs I'd just chop frame infront of the rear leaf mount, add in 10-20" of rectangle tube.

And yes, as stated if it matters the LJ had 10" added behind door and 4" behind wheelwell.

I have read most of the posts on it, and most got to a linked suspension in the rear. I found a tub, $400, I plan to cut it up and stretch the 1988s body. Also looking at using LJ corner armor to get things lined up for the body and use the rectangle tubing for the frame stretch. Just havent seen to many keep the leaf springs.

Unless you're adding the 4" behind the wheelwell too be sure you get stretched LJ or TJ to LJ armor.

Mine is a TJ converted to an Lj but should give you an idea. I cut the TJ frame off right before it sweeps up for the rear axle and then used the back of an Lj frame cut off to match. 22” long internal sleeve and the frame side link mounts span over the splice.

A friend of mine built a stretched frame out of 2 TJ frames by cutting them in different spots to get the length. It was pretty much Lj length with the rear arch being closer to the rear like a TJ.

The back of the frame on an LJ is longer than a TJ. I’d argue a YJ rear is pretty close to a TJ

You’ll have to stretch it before the wheel arch kick up only… which Will stretch the tub behind the door only. But if you are smart you’ll stretch the tub to LJ dimensions so you can use a factory soft top

This is a TJ stretched to LJ specs with a LJ dust cover installed
