Has anyone here tried magnet fishing? Our two youngest kids have been bugging me to try it so I bought a magnet and rope kit. We have a couple spots local to us that should be good spots to try. One is where an old bridge on a gravel road crosses over a creek that a lot of people fish from. Another is a large pond at a boy scout camp. Now that the ice is finally out we might give it a try this weekend.

There’s a pretty good chance this will end up like the metal detector they had to have that now sits in the corner of the garage, but I figure anything to give us an excuse to spend the day outside is a good thing. Hopefully we catch a few things to keep them interested.

sooo confused.. ya'll are literally buying magnets to fish for stuff in the water?? what are ya'll trying to catch, fish?? or old car parts that were dumped???

Basically anything metal. **** people drop off the bridge, whatever.

I'm sure I do some things that plenty of people sit back and shake their heads at but damn... this sounds like one of the ****tier more boring ways to piss away an afternoon I can think of.

Glad I’m not the only one. I was going to ask the same thing.

We live in a pretty rural area. You can only listen to the hoot owls **** the chickens for so long before you get bored.

Absofuckinglutely. I have a couple harbor freight magnets that the kids use when we are in the boat fishing.

Never really found anything worth much. One time the oldest daughter pulled up a huge haul of fishing lures that were all tangled up with fishing line. I put it next to my chair while fishing and forgot about it when we packed up. My dumbass left probably $100 worth of fishing tackle for the next guy to stumble upon it.

The kids think it's super neat. They are always finding doo dads and whatnot in the water.

Also get yourself and ugly stick (fishing pole) and a cheap ass baitcaster reel with 50lb test line. The kids will love it.

Put the magnet on there and send it.

Guns people toss off bridges.

Was going to try this at a lake years ago, then saw an article in the paper... Local FD or something was doing a diving exercise under the bridge, and they found like a dozen stolen/removed serial firearms under it. Decided maybe it would be best to not try magnet fishing around there.

I have a spare heavy action ugly stick that would be perfect for this. Thanks for the idea.

I picked up a pair of "ugly sticks" rods at Wally-World last year... I have never fished fresh water; looking for a couple of good reels to outfit the rods with. :smokin::smokin::smokin:

If they are set up for spinning reels, I like using the cheap shimano spinners with them. That’s my go-to combo for catfishing.

That sounds like the spot where all those canoe accidents happen. Definitely a good choice.

My brother and a couple of his buddies have taken up diving for old bottles and that kinda stuff...they've taken a break since they found this though...
