Never been there. I’ve got to fly in to Denver in the AM, do a quick >1hr job, then fly home in the next AM.

Is Downtown Denver worth checking out/staying? I like staying places where once I’m parked and checked in, I don’t need to drive anywhere. I like to be able to walk to restaurants and sight see on foot.

How’s the traffic early AM from downtown to the airport?

Not sure if I should just find a hotel close to the airport and be bored the entire afternoon/evening, or see Denver DT?

If I remember right the airport is a good clip from downtown, (25 miles or so) and it's a big bitch, with long walks. just to keep in mind when planning your home trip.

I never found downtown Denver that appealing, and even before the "homeless epidemic" it seemed like they were trying to get a head start. Maybe it's changed though... I hadn't been there in a minute and a half.

I really liked the Chop House near union station for dinner but downtown area has turned to **** the last several times I was there. Last time was two weeks ago for reference. AM traffic into Denver sucks as does PM traffic out. Denver biscuit company is a good breakfast place with good Bloody Marys

Downtown Denver is a long drive from the airport. I have stayed both near the airport and downtown. I wouldn't want to fight the traffic trying to get to the airport unless you are OK with possibly missing a flight.

How early AM? Before 5 not bad, 5-6 not as good but reasonable, 6-7 heavy but moving, after 7 uuuugly. And the airport is a long way from downtown. I'm not really into the hipster IPA scene that downtown Denver thrives on lately (and I live an hour drive north) so I don't go there much, but depending on where downtown (it's a fairly big place) there's a fair bit of food options.

Theres lightrail from the airport to Downtown

Allow an hour from Denver to the Airport depending on traffic, usually less.

Allow 90 minutes at the airport especially if you are checking bags and are non Pre Check. Lots of construction at the airport, and security gates are moving around. PreCheck, carry on, arrive at the airport 60 mins before departure. If in a rental car, allow an additional 30 - 45 mins, as all the rental car stuff is offsite.

Downtown Denver is trying to emulate San Francisco and LA for general nastiness. If your work is done in an hour, I would split Denver and spend my time elsewhere. Heck I would recommend Boulder over Denver. Now if work is in the Tech Center, different story, nice hotels, and you can walk to several restaurants, but not like a true downtown. You will probably drive over to the mall for food and drink.

Colorado is not really a park it and walk state. Everyone drives everywhere. Even if you stayed in Boulder you would be driving to trailheads and sight seeing.

There is one hotel at the airport, but spendy. Most hotels are on Tower Road, a 10 minute drive to the airport, and most of the hotels have shuttles. Several places to eat and drink among the Tower Road Hotels. Or finish your work and book into the Gaylord and have everything on site - albeit 40 miles from the mountains.

Somebody I know was just bitching that there are no public restrooms at the Pearl Street Mall. I laughed.

Having picked up a load from the airport, as well as cruised through Denver metro three times in the recent couple weeks stay close.

Otherwise get ready to fight traffic...

If you stay on tower rd go to moonlight diner. It is down the road from us so we go there probably every other month. Great smothered green chili fries.

The whole mall is a public restroom.

Been in Colorado nearly 30 years, sad to see how it has slid downhill, more so since the state turned blue, no stopping now.

Pearl Street Mall used to be entertaining watching the freak show. Now it is sad seeing how junkie ridden it has become. Mind you don't step on a needle. Used to be quaint and eccentric, now just another liberal **** hole.

As said above, Denver is not what it used to be. More people living in tents in quite a few areas of downttown and 16th st mall is a ghost town anymore because of all the junkies and homeless. If you want to hike head into Boulder or west of longmont. If you were here longer I'd tell ya to come up and shoot some guns or do some ditchboarding (wakeboard behind the razor on the ditch that borders my property)
Are you still doing telecom? If so who you still working for?

I remember there being an awsome strip club/ steakhouse... and not much after that
Shotgun Willies:laughing:
Never went in but stayed across the road in the Holiday Inn a lot in the last 15 years

Cherry Creek is the area I hang out in but 40 minutes from the airport
Cherry Creek Grill is the best restaurant in Denver unless you want Messican

How does this work? How deep is the ditch? What happens when you catch a front edge?

It sounds awesome
It is anywhere from 1ft deep to 3ft deep. You don't catch an edge or you end up in the grass or slamming into the water/dirt. A 30 pack of beer and it makes a fun day . Got about 1/2 mile of ditch to ride and got some turns in it. Kinda reminds me of jetboat racing. Its a blast when its hot out.

IMHO: Find a Hotel with a nice bar and call it done. :smokin:

Stayed around the Stapleton area years ago. Was nice and pretty clean. Every chain restaurant you can imagine and a bunch of little local bars and taco places. There was a light rail to get to the airport to skip traffic. FBI is there

I've been once about 3-4 years ago, lots of homeless downtown. Other than the restaurants I would skip it.

As far as the bums and junkies, is it any worse than SF or LA?
Slightly better. But no cable cars or beaches or Chinatowns. Colorado was harsh back in the day, no Chinatowns and no Indian Resevations to speak of. Kicked em right the **** out.:vader:
