I've never put out birdseed for birds. Why the hell would you?

(Yes, we have plenty of birds in treeless NM) :flipoff2:

No. There's no shortage of wildlife to stare at, if I ever got that bored.

I see ravens hopping around fighting over garbage, or chasing off the occasional eagle. I try to make sure they're not by my trash.

Tossed a thing of stale fries to a group of seaguls once.

Man that was a sight, they were fighting eachother like hell for 10 seconds till they ate em all.

Worth it

Not directly, we give the chickens a scoop of seed mix every morning... they take what they like and when they finish the wild birds fly in and take the leftovers

My neighbor (1/4 acre suburbia) has an overgrown “garden” and a **** ton of rats in their yard. I don’t want to attract them to my yard. I don’t put out food.

I've had a feeder out for dang close to a year and the birds won't touch it.

(as a rule, everything I touch turns to ****, so I don't know why I thought feeding birds would be much different; ,and it's not)

Wife loves her birds. Hummingbird feeders in Summer (now have to be hung 10' off the ground - damn deer)

Wild Bird seed on at least 3 feeders
Bird Feed Blocks in another 2 feeders
Seed scattered on the ground for smaller birds

Bird seed also works for feeding
  • Rabbits, they will eat out of her hand all summer
  • Squirrels, she had at least 4 different ones this summer, a couple would come when she called them by name. One of them was very comfortable running around inside the house, and seems to love the buffalo hide for bedding material
  • Deer. yes I know, don't feed the wild animals. We have a couple of herds that roam our part of the canyon. She will put the bird seed out in the morning, and again in the afternoon, and 5 minutes later the deer show up, and scarf most of the seed. A couple are tame enough that they will stand within a few feet of the door when they see her car arrive home, and they know within 5 minutes she will be out to fill up the seed trays, and they get first scarf.
  • Mice, ****ing mice. Run around at night, collect the remaining seed, and head straight to - the garage, or my truck, or my Mercedes, or her Subaru to store the seed and build nests. Mice have cost several $K in damage to vehicles

As a result of the wild birds, we also indirectly feed
  • Owls. They sit on the bird pole on the edge of the roof, and feast on the rodents eating the bird seed. Mostly at night, so we usually just catch the shadows
  • Birds of Prey. Eagles, Hawks, Falcons. They appreciate the increased bunny and rodent population, and hang out near the house to take advantage of the increased snacks running around
  • Bobcats and kittens. mmmm, is that Bunny I can smell? thanks hoomans. I was in the shower once, looked out the window, and watched a bobcat stalk, then attack, and catch a large rabbit. Meandered over onto the front steps and then had a great bunny snack.

I do get pissed when I go to put on my work boots and have half a boot filled with bird seed. I get really pissed when I have to clean up rodent nests in vehicles, or repair wiring, or replace hood insulation, or trunk carpet or panels

But feeding the rodents with wings gives my wife great joy, so ................
I now buy wild bird seed in 50lbs bulk, and buy the sunflower seeds in same bulk (squirrel really likes the sunflower seed, added bonus is they stash it all around the house, so in summer we get sunflowers everywhere

No I don't feed them. The neighbors behind me and the ones 2 doors down from me feed them and as a result we have had a flock of 20+ Pigeons that took up permanent residence about 5 years ago. The pigeons like to **** all over the place which is really annoying. 😡

Hell yea I feed 'em, they love lead whether copper coated or raw!.

Ex wife did, then started putting out peanuts for the stellers jays. They're smart onery ****suckers, we had two that hung around and would come scream in your face if the food was gone. But then they started killing and ripping the hearts out of the little waxwings that she liked so much so the food went away. That and bears. ****ing squirrels also found the peanuts and filled up the airbox on my 4runner via the snorkel. I have a video somewhere putting a latex glove over the opening after one of those furry little bastards dove into it, not a happy squirrel :lmao:

Nope. Dog kills anything flying past her. Doesn't eat it, just chomps it, then drops it and stares at it and wonders why it quit playing.

Cats eat whatever they can get.

No squirrels here, but I'm not going to attract bird **** in my front lawn either.

All of this. We have a couple feeders of wild bird food, a couple of peanut pieces, a large with sunflower hearts, 2 medium and a large with safflower, one with 4 bricks of hot pepper suet, a hummingbird nectar feeder, an oriole nectar feeder, and grape jelly tray feeders for the orioles. We also have a squirrel feeder/picnic table to try and keep them occupied and away from the feeders (met with little success), and a couple heated bird baths for non-frozen water in the Minnnesota winters.

If you want to **** with the squirrels - watch Mark Roper on YouTube. Ex nasa engineer that builds obstacle courses for the little bastards

WD40 on the bird feeder poles keeps Barry and Flo and family frustrated.

****ing Steller Jays man.

Couple years ago one of the rabbits had a den in the dirt where I was building retaining walls. Would tend to the babies right in front of us and let wifey handle them. She put out a game camera only to capture a couple of Jays digging into the den and eating / killing every single baby bunny

Yep. It's cheap entertainment and birds are cool
This.
Witness my brave birds riding the feeder today. I also enjoy feeding the ducks, because ducks are funny.
