How much thread?

So, I am making my tie rods and drag links, with DOM and weld on thread bungs.

How much TRE/DRE thread do you leave exposed?

I've been re-thinking what I do.

If rock contact is inevitable, the exposed threaded shank really likes to bend first in a lot of instances, so I try to choke up as much as possible while allowing a little wiggle room for adjustment. A couple threads exposed like Weasel noted seems to be a decent balance
 
I’m leaving the same amount threads showing to match the thickness of the lock nut as a guide, for future adjustments, based on nothing but what makes sense to me.

Well if you bend it its not gonna get longer…
