Over a year ago now I picked up what was supposed to be a D44 from a 1970 2wd 800a. I finally get it under one of my scout 80's, go to put the wheels on and my 5x5.5's do not fit. It never occurred to me to check the bolt pattern. It looks to be 5x4.5.

I can't recall ever hearing of 5x4.5 on anything IH, have you?
Any speculation of what I have or how it ended up this way?

Evidence of moved perches? Date code on ring gear? XJ D44?

Date code on the ring gear seems to be 12-1969, which lines up.

I don't see any evidence the perches were moved, if they were it was done long enough ago for the brake lines to rot off.

Looking at Google images I think the XJ d44 has different tube end flanges, but I really can't say with any certainty. It's been nearly a decade since I sold my XJ, I don't recall.

Might be original....

Fairly certain 2wd came with 5×4 1/2. At least mine did. I sold the axle years ago and gave the rims to a friend so can't double check. The front axle I sold to a guy restoring willy's and he said the scouts used the same parts.

Can you just swap axle shafts? The 5x5.5s were tapered axle I believe.

I have a 1969 RHD 2wd with 5x4.5 wheels on it. I would say original.

Looks like you can probably redrill to 5x5.5.

Very true, that would be the honest easiest option. Or just run a 1 to 1.5" wheel adapter since the axles are so narrow anyhow.
