New Covid Variant Identified In Africa; Heavily Mutated Strain Called “A Big Jump In Evolution”

UPDATED with WHO news: The U.K. added six African countries to its travel quarantine list on Thursday after a new, potentially more-transmissible variant of Covid-19 was identified there. The BBC said the countries are South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.

Twenty-two positive cases of the variant, which is being called B.1.1.529, have been recorded in South Africa, according to multiple reports. Some 59 cases have been detected worldwide, and only in South Africa, Hong Kong and Botswana. But some experts are concerned.
This variant did surprise us,” Tulio de Oliveira, director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research and Innovation Sequencing Platform told the New York Times. “It has a big jump in evolution, many more mutations than we expected, especially after a very severe third wave of Delta [variant].”

The World Health Organization has called a special meeting for Friday to the discuss the new variant and what it might mean for Covid treatment and vaccines.

“We don’t know very much about this yet,” Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on Covid, said in a livestreamed Q&A on social media. “What we do know is that this variant has a large number of mutations. And the concern is that when you have so many mutations, it can have an impact on how the virus behaves.”

The UK Health Security Agency also has its eye on B.1.1.529:

Didn't we already have a south African variant?

The variants come from those that are vaccinated.
That fact has been proven.

Shit. I still don’t fucking care.:homer:
To add to that, look at the countries where the variant is found vs. treatment.

so what about the variants that were identified before the vaccines were released, were they just really forward thinking, progressive viruses?
There's been several identified at this point, the one the media loves came about during large scale vaccine trials in Brazil and was the Brazil variant before it got sanitized as the delta variant, which is significantly vaccine resistant and generally made an easy patsy to hide the previously inflated numbers.

Virus mutate, it's what they do. Sticking with the mandates is just silly talk

“Several”? more like dozens. probably into the hundreds now. it doesn’t get a greek letter until it’s really proven itself to possibly be “epidemiologically” significant. Normally they’re just indecipherable strings of numbers and letters.. Not sure why anybody‘s surprised that it mutates, much like every virus in the history of everything has done.

Its media and government fear mongering. Same shit they pulled after 9/11 to push thier agendas through and keep the people scared. If more than 2 brown skinned dudes with beards were in the same apartment it was a terrorist sleeper cell, and if a U-Haul truck was parked in front of the post office for more than 15mins the bomb squad rolled out and CNN was there. But hey the TSA, patriot act and evreything else fixed that. Apply all that to covid now... Varients are going to kill us, it's the anti vaxxers fault, but if we print an assload of money and give it to the big corps while banning industries from working this will all be fixed right up.

Well, I read some stupid ass article six months ago that said that come november or so, they would release the real virus, one that the vaccines were actually designed for. All the people that hadn’t been vaccinated would die from it, while the vaccinated may get sick but would survive. Thus cleaning out all the riffraff that were offering any resistance to the plan. Guess they were right on schedule.

There was not really a variant until the lab made the first one. Then the “D” variant came extremely quickly after the first “vax” doses were mass injected. There are papers that support the hypothesis that variants are directly related to the “vax”

No surprise, time will tell if it runs like Delta. We are just seeing hospital capacity drop to 100% after the Delta surge.

That’s absolute bullshit. there were identified variants in the first few months of 2020. Delta was identified in India a month before the vaccines were authorized.

and i'm still curious how much of the delta has actually been confirmed as the variant rather than a simple cover using the claim that anything representing vaccine breakthrough "must be delta, because it works so well on the original at 94%" and, then since you have presumed delta, you (not you, specifically) have assumed it as the dominate in the area effecting everybody.

That's called propaganda to get more people vaxxed.

interesting, it talks about the origin being India and then goes on to talk about the strong hold that Delta caught in brazil. September 2021 with references to early 2021

august 2021

Similarly, in São Paulo, which has the second highest number of confirmed cases of the Delta variant in Brazil, Governor João Doria of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) declared Monday (August 16) the “Day of Hope” because the entire population up over the age of 18 will have had access to the first shot of the vaccine. The date will coincide with the largest reopening of activities since the beginning of the pandemic. It is especially hypocritical to use such an occasion to talk about “hope” when the rapidly spreading Delta variant is reportedly responsible for breakthrough infections and for the reduction of vaccine protection, especially for those who have received only a first shot.

testing in 2020 in brazil, article from early nov 2020

The vaccine is undergoing late-stage tests in Brazil involving 3,100 volunteers in Sao Paulo and Bahia states, and would be imported from Pfizer's factories in the United States and Europe, the spokesman said, giving no further details.
The company said on Monday its vaccine is more than 90% effective based on initial trial results.

pfizer press release, brazil was among the early testing sites. Dated 10 December 2020

NEW YORK & MAINZ, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) and BioNTech SE (Nasdaq: BNTX) today announced that the New England Journal of Medicinehas published safety and final efficacy results from the pivotal Phase 3 trial of BNT162b2, their mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate. In the trial of 43,448 participants, who were 16 years and older, 21,720 of whom received BNT162b2 and 21,728 placebo, the two-dose regimen of 30 μg BNT162b2, which was given 21 days apart, was well-tolerated and demonstrated vaccine efficacy of 95% against COVID-19.

edit: I think i quoted the wrong post  I know there were early variants identified, I was sparked by the "origin in India" for delta variant comment to do a bit more digging. Based on my admittedly not always good memory, it seemed like the big media push was from brazil and then the shift to making it illegal to talk about origin countries killed off the term brazil variant and brought us Delta variant as the first meaningful shift. This was shortly after the success of the early trials being loudly conducted in Brazil....reading tea leaves and all that jazz :rasta:

I don't really trust what hospitals say anymore.

My wife is an RN, does work from home admin. stuff. 6 months ago delta hit her area, and all of the sudden hospitals were overrun with kids. Packed full of kids, dying left and right, the new delta strain- unlike the 1st round- is just as bad on kids as adults. CLOSE THE PLAYGROUNDS, SHIT JUST GOT REAL. The hospitals were being overrun with kids dying from covid-19.

So here we are, 6 months later... and it never really happened.? Out of her network, I think they lost 3 kids, all 3 of which had severe preexisting conditions. 3 kids. Out of 15-20 hospitals.
