What's new

Wood chipper vs humanoid.

So mud is muddy I guess...FA and FO. I'm sorry I'm just now crawling out of a cry about it , on the old site.ppls alcohol addiction. You were beyond funny at the time.
I’m just along for the ride, I have no insight into what anyone else thinks or why they do what they do and most importantly, I don’t care. I’m doing all I can to keep a handle on this side of the range and that’s an everyday challenge.

I would rather be dead.
I dunno...

Having no legs would suck. Building your own replacements could be very cool.

About 10 years ago, a local arborist was doing a saturday job and he had his whole family with him on the site helping. His 6 yr old wanted to help and no noticed him put a branch in the chipper. It pulled him in. Super depressing time in our town. The guy got out of the wood cutting business but ended up having to restart the business about 2 years later as it was pretty much the only thing he had done for his entire life and was struggling to support his family. He still has the chipper as well, couldn't sell it and didnt know what to do with it.

Ya gotta make a machine that works, but those look useless. Leg bones jammed into the chute, muscle getting torn free a strip at a time, blood flying everywhere, and you're gonna have the focus and dexterity to grab those slippery little tampon strings? Ha.

The moment you feel your self getting leaned into it you grab them. Most of my scenarios were risking going in head first. I always stood off-center but once in a while you just get a branch that twists around and wants to grab you.

I used to feed these babies. They'll take up to 18" diameter and self regulate the feed wheels so the engine can rev back up and keep going. Hell the smallest engine we had on them was a 5.9 Cummins.

Seems like the vids I've seen of new ones require an operator to actively pull a big handle down to keep the feed engaged. Probably take an extra guy to run it efficiently, but seems a million times safer.

Not when you're feeding the machine with a 4810 ASV Posi-Track or a Serco 8000 log grapple. The ability for it to run engaged in the feed position without someone holding the controls has it's times when it's safer. When I used equipment to feed it there was 0% chance of someone being pulled in so they were clear of the feed operation.

Hell they make these sizes with log grapples built right on the back. We had grapple trucks though. If I had too many logs to fit in the grapple box I'd just feed them in those chippers.

I sure miss running these.

Not Morbark or Vermeer. Morbark has a spring to help pull the top drum down and the ram to lift it is double acting so you can power down if needed. Vermeer has vertical feed wheel that are pulled together by huge springs. Both have winches to pull bigger stuff but we use Stella's with grapples on them.

Here is a stock photo of what we use. It's pretty slick and efficient right up until the guys break everything.

I guess his career as a tree guy was short lived. Something like that happened around here, all they found was the guys shoes outside the chipper.
Anybody remember the movie Fargo? His name in prison is Mr Chips
