Just reading the latest 4x4 rag and saw mention of them using a Wix 58953 filter for an inline power steering filter. Sounds like a good idea to me, it's magnetic as well, so should grab metal too. Has anyone used one and have any feedback on it? 3/8 fitting on both ends, just not sure on how fine it filters or it's flow rate.

I have no information, but it seems like it wouldn't hurt to filter all the fluids on a vehicle. On my current project, I'm trying out an inline radiator coolant filter.

I ran a similar Manefine 3/8 filter on the return hose in my Tacoma. When I killed the last steering pump it was nice to not have to flush all the glitter out of the steering system. It all got caught in the filter.

I would imagine having an in line filter may also dissipate some of the heat from the fluid

That filter is intended for transmissions. The flow rate for a trans is ok to go through #6 hose and barbs on that filter. For full hydraulic steering, you might be pushing it depending on the pump output.

That is a fair point too. I removed the inline filter after blowing up my last pump because I was concerned that it was a contributing factor. Plan was to drop a pair of heavy magnets on the reservoir to catch any shavings next time

Magnets are only in addition to a filter. There is still alot of non ferrous debris mix in the oil.

That's a good point. I am liking the remote filter mount linked earlier in the thread.

Assuming it adds a half quart when used with a standard oil filter and also adds some passive cooling which ought to help the whole system, right?

I am not full hydro but with hydro assist on my truck it likes to spit fluid when it heats up. I know I ought to add a cooler.
