Bought a high mileage 214k ‘01 GMC 2500 4x4, 6.0, CC, LB and slowly going through it here —-> 2001 GMC 2500HD project

For the transmission, will a simple drain & fill open pandora’s box and cause it to give up the ghost?

Should be the 4L80E. and it shifts good, tight, etc. but seeing different things online for service. Not going to flush it but don’t want to deal with towing it to shop if it craps out afterwards. Planning a basic drain and fill.

Unless it's currently acting up, or the fluid looks HORRIBLE, drain and fill and new filter

Then every 6 months drain and fill the atf until it's all red

It's not like you're driving it out of the state

Correct, not driving it out of the state but I might take it with me back to mainland.

It’ll give up the ghost regardless.

Just drop the pan, replace filter, inspect the pan for solid chunks, you’re good to go if none found, clean pan out, put back on, send it.
