Who Plays the Lottery

I buy some every blue moon for my girlfriend and I because she loves it. She's hooked on keno. Won 60k on it once. Took home around 40. Probably spends that much in a month on it.

Anyone else ever win a nice chunk of change?

I only chip in on office pots when it gets big, so i've never won anything.

My neighbor won ~$50K on a scratch off. He went into a store to buy something cheap. They had a minimum charge to pay with a debit card so he bought two scratch offs too.... I don't have that type of luck.

Anyway, what's the difference between odds an chances? I figured if you buy two tickets they still have the same odds of winning, but having two tickets would give you two chances at winning.

Two different names for the same thing. As I think gladman pointed out, your odds and chances double when you buy two tickets, but in a practical sense, even with two tickets they're still soooo damn low that you're basically throwing away twice as much money, cuz lets be real, you're not gonna hit the jackpot :p

I do go to casinos every now and then with friends, and I get a little entertainment from blowing $20 on a penny slot machine, or heck if I have a friend thats decently competent at poker I've given them a couple bucks to play for me, because if I were playing my own money I'd be too confused to enjoy watching the game happen. But in those cases I know after the entertainment my money will be gone and I'm ok with that. I don't go into it hoping to "win big"

Opposite for me. I've played poker for 20 years and go to Vegas at least 4 times a year. Never bought a lottery ticket or scratcher of any kind.

My wife used to be a honcho at a casino, she still has her California gaming license although she is no longer in gaming. I've been around her and her friends when they play cards and I realize I am woefully out of my depth. One of my brothers fancies himself an expert poker player... he sat in with my wife and her friends and came away humbled... he loves going to vegas and all that. I know what it would take for me to be good at it and I would rather spend my energy on other stuff.

I did enjoy watching my wife destroy him in cards... Just watching her shuffle, you kind of go, uh oh. She also went through tons of training on money and can spot fake money really fast. She says Venezuela has a department within their government solely dedicated to counterfeiting american money...

Anyway, I admire people who are good at cards etc, just not my thing.

So for a 750 Million dollar jackpot, what is the value of the tickets that were sold???

How much is divided up to the states coffers?

depending on the state it will vary, in Ca, you'd end up, I think, with 360m.

Why does he keep the losers?

Local lady won a million dollars on Lotto (this was years ago) & she presented the losing scratch offs (lots of them) when to claim prize + deal w/tax.

I won $4 on the powerball ball last week. Big whoopee-

Why present the losers? Did she claim she had already paid taxes on the million bucks she won from years past?

I'll throw a couple of bucks in when they get to obscene amounts. Otherwise, I don't touch it. I figure that you can't win if you don't try. But just like most things, I don't let it run my life.

Saving all your losers if you play regularly might be a good idea so you can write them off as a loss if you win a decent amount.

I might drop a hundo after work on mega seeing ad how I very rairly buy those.

Why present the losers?

They can be used as a tax write off/deductible...

Did she claim she had already paid taxes on the million bucks she won from years past?

From what I heard, she won a million dollars one time & used the tons of losing scratch offs to claim a bigger payout pronto.

I hope I got the story right, mebbe it was a winning scratch off?

Looks like Powerball was a no winner last night. $640 mil for it and think I saw Mega for $750.
