What's new

Who knows about buying H1's ?

I have decided to add Hummers to my rental fleet for 2025.

First are they reliable?

What I have been told by someone that rents them is you buy 5 to get 3 running ones, truth?

Is there a company that sells turn key ones?

This guy is offering to sell me some for $50k each but that seems high.

I am looking for the actual military ones that have been made street legal.

A quick google search only turns up the imported ones from the 90's that were made for the street and are selling for $100k

I just want them basic, no doors, no a/c, just barebones.

I know they are loud (doesn't matter) they don't go fast (what is the cruising speed?)

I plan on wrapping them in crazy colors and renting them out, so educamaite me. :homer:
Is this the guy in North Carolina selling his whole H1 rental fleet?

Friend had a H1 on 39.5 Baja claws and wheeled with us pretty often. It was only a novelty, didn’t really do anything spectacular.

Why not just rent jeeps with all the panels pulled off on the nice days? Maybe not much more reliable but way easier to fix/maintain and most importantly drive.

Or do some 911 safari/dakkar type builds out of automatic 996 cabrio's....those would be fun on road and slightly off on the dirt roads. Just put a small lift, some knobbly tires, wrap them with cool graphics too and you're set. Should be actually cheaper than Hummers and still reliable/fun/interesting.

Another Jeep vote.....Went to key west a while back, there doorless jeeps being Rented and driven all over. The people seemed to be enjoying them as well

Grab a few TJs. Cage them/no doors etc.
Likely will not be able to keep them in stock, perfect capable mild trail wheeler with a small suspension lift.
Or contact 2BB and buy out his Samurai stash.

I drove one piss ass drunk at a friend's once. I didn't enjoy driving it, it was slow as shit, and it was easy to get started even very inebriated.

So, I'd say they are turds and easy to steal by drunk people or your average retarded meth user.

So there's that.

I had more fun in the airplane tug, until someone blew up the transmission. :rasta:

I would imagine its more of a niche thing to be able rent a war machine Humvee rather then just needing a random 4x4 to see the Knoxville area. Jeeps are boring and available on every corner in every SmithJonesBobville.

Id think coming up with a cheap RELIABLE bolt in drivetrain and a good “route” to suggest to customers to see the best things locally would make a win for these things.

For what the one goober wanted for one Hummer, build a fleet of ex-police Crown Vics and put lunchbox lockers in the rear ends. Use a small lift and your imagination to make 'em look like doomsday vehicles. One gets ruined, find another. They might have too much acceleration capability compared to the Hummer though

Had one for 6 or 7 years. It was kind of fun. Saw Paragon and Rausch Creek. With Thornturds even! Road tripped it 3 hours to WV a couple times. I was a younger man then. Besides cooking a 6.2 because that back right cylinder. Whatever number that is? Half shafts and even just the bolts would break. Inboard brakes with a quick bite at the tires took it's toll. Other than that stuff I just beat on it. Sold it for 20k about 15 years ago. The only vehicle that I came out ahead on.

They sidehill awesome, but that's about the only thing I can think of that they do well. Even with 38.5 SX's this would get hung up on the rockers often. It's the first year they were available to the public, 92 maybe, it was such a turd he put a whipple super charger on it just so it could freeway speeds.

Matt's Offroad recovers them with broken suspension stuff pretty regularly. There's an outfit near him that rents them for offroad use.

Something legal changed recently- there are a shitload of them titled and road legal for sale in the last year.

Man, with Monkeypox making the rounds, I wouldn't be shaking hands after your Jeep customers drop them off. Dump the keys in rubbing alcohol too!!!!

The way I see it, you're renting it to people that want the novelty of driving a Hummer for a few hours.

The people that know the reliability, terrible driving characteristics, noise, etc... are clearly not going to be your target market.

You want the "Super Dad" suburban vacationer that wants to throw his family in the thing and drive around like he's hot shit for a few hours.

I bet you could buy just one, put a somewhat obnoxious stereo in it with a flashy wrap and some LED lights, and you would have people waiting in line to throw money at you.

Like someone said earlier, if it sucks to maintain the diesel, throw a crate 350 in it with open pipes and let the renters run the wheels off of it.

All I know is they top out at maybe 55 on a good day downhill with a tailwind and just about everything on them sucks to work on.

I got behind a couple older guys cruising in theirs on a random tx highway. They pulled over so I could pass.

And finally, the outboard seating position is unnatural; you WILL have renters sideswiping a bunch of shit on the right side.
Read the above. They are very wide compared to civy vehicles. You probably won't be able to afford the insurance for very long.

I like them but they definitely had their weak spots. Of course I got to drive and work on them a bunch the first half of the 90s so I might be a bit touched in the head from that.:usa:

They had a duramax and 4l80 for a year or 2. Parts are hard to get sometimes. They are uncomfortable and slow. There is one in my yard.

yes, that is what gave me the thought of renting some out myself
I was intrigued but at about 55k avg each for his whole business the price seemed high relative to just buying from gov planet and building them out to be a reasonably reliable rental. But i think the idea works with the right person behind it.

If he rents them, he's going to have to fix them.
