Hog prices are ridiculously low right now. No need to have one in your yard. Hog farmer damn near give you one.
This....very much this ^
Wouldn't be surprised to see the population of "feral" hogs sky rocket in the next couple of years. Hog farmers are pretty much to the point of giving them away or just turning them loose.
Around here, they aren't taking appointments anymore. They are full through early Spring 21. Yes she was cheap. You have to be really careful buying those white confinement hogs. They dont have any natural instincts left and have never been off of concrete. Tough to get them to adapt to normal farm life. They dont even know the difference between sun and shade and die of severe sunburn related illness. They are like trying to raise broiler house chickens. The bigger problem here is the fact that the mom-and-pop butcher shops are backed up months.
And 90% of the DIY home butchers, when it comes to hogs, shouldn't.
3 of them. Told my wife we should send them off to be rendered while the bones are still soft but she isn't having any of it :|

Pfffft. A guy from another forum I frequent posted this awhile back:
Guy isn't a kid either.

Hogs will plow the entire yard hardcore, I think my wife would not let me even consider the idea.
Wasn't there a dude here with a pig named Mo-ham-ed? It got mauled up by a dog too.
I'd get one from a farm. Housing an animal that lives in its own shit sounds....like shit.
You have obviously never raised hogs. They will shit in one corner and never lay there. Yes they will root in the mud but not where they shit.

Really. Wow. I thought they just shit everywhere and walk around in it. Never would have considered them clean animals.
Currently have 3 of them. We usually raise 2-4 a year. My wife worked with a couple doctors a few years back and made a deal. They buy them for $$, we feed them and deliver to the processor. They pay for processing. It has worked out that it makes our contribution (other than time) very little to fill the freezer.
This years batch was a little different than usual. The breeder we get them from bought a bunch from a lot, so they are smaller than normal. Going to have to feed them another 2 months to make weight. The breeder said the guy that owns the lot made him a hell of a deal on them. It was either sell cheap, or just shoot them, since nobody was taking them. It took them almost 2 weeks to figure out how to use the self feeder.
pigs don't sweat, thay is why they like mud to keep cool.
use to let my roam around an acre area.
shit in the farthest corner
