What's new

What was your first vehicle and who paid for it?

81 dodge reg cab Lbox
base model
Slant 6 4spd
No power steering or sway bar
free from the grandparents when I was 16

1996 ferd explorer v6 4wd
I bought it from my parents for $2500
It was 8 years old, ~140k
I was 17
Sold it after a couple years when the transmission was stating to go out for a suburban

I "needed" a car for my senior year. Had worked at summer camp for 3 years and had some cash. Couldn't find anything, my dad was doing the searching and it wasn't going well. My mom had gotten the exploder after my dad used it for a sales car for a few years. I bought it from them, she got a Forrester.

At the time I wasn't much into cars. Didn't do much too it, but it let me get into some light offroading with friends.

1967 RS/SS Chevrolet Camaro 375 HP 396 CI W Muncie 4 speed transmission 12 bolt posi differential with factory ladder bar.

Will need to dig thru pics to find them as they are old school polaroid.

I bought it from a racer dude that I met at OCIR Irvine Calif in about 1980 for $2500.00 clams

First was parental donation: 79 Pontiac Grand Prix. They bought new. Then they bought a new car 86/87. Grand Prix sat in driveway until I got it in 90. Fawk no I don't have it.

I still somewhat have my 3rd car that they helped finance($2k): 75 FJ40 that was 80% done frame off before owner "abandoned" it(96). In a few parts on the back 40 acre right now:homer: Ironically, 3rd car in the project car queue:rolleyes:

Do you still have it? Long gone, I remember it as a good runabout car (2-door hatchback)

a 1990 plymouth sundance I purchased in 1998 for $750 from my grandfather. an obvious sweetheart deal. 2.5L with a three speed. I mean, come on chrysler, that's why you lost to the imports, a freaking three speed?
The dashboard lights would randomly quit working, but you could fonz them back if you knew where to smack the dash.
It caught fire once and I put it out with a biggie coke. valve cover gasket leaking onto the manifold.
It looked exactly like this. Sweet two tone and wheels and all.

'85 Toyota Xtra-Cab, paid for with money that my grandfather left me so he paid for it as far as I'm concerned. It was 20 years old when I got it at 15. My dad and I did all the suspension and drivetrain work on it aside from setting up the thirds. I drove it for 3 years with a bluetooth front driveline, never did get that done before I got rid of it. I wish to hell I still had it, I traded it for a built (poorly) Samurai that I eventually parted out. Of all the cars/trucks I've sold, that's the only one I want back.

How old was it when you got it? Was 1977 so that piece of shit pickup was around 24 years old.
How old were you when you got it? I was 14 years old at the time.
Do you still have it? Still have the back half as a trash or firewood hauler trailer. (The steel in that old truck bed is near bullet proof.)
Details This slow low geared old ride lasted about a year before it tossed a rod through the block. Then cut the cab off to do the trailer thing with the frame and bed. Replaced with a '68 Impala SS. Next in a long string of cars I had, traded or destroyed.
Pics? None on this machine to attach.

'67 F100. It was 25 years old, I was 16. Paid $1000 of hay stacking money to get it. It was my dad's for a long time, he sold it, I bought it back. Dude I bought it from, I slayed his sister in it for years. Even bought a smaller steering wheel to make it a little more roomy! :lmao:

Spent a ton of time and money restoring it during and after high school. I still have it, even have a for sale ad here for it. It's due for restoration again, and I either need to find it a new home or make time to bring it back into shape.

Deove it for another 80k ish miles, then it dropped a valve.
Traded it for a set of snow tires for my brothers truck.

1972 Ford Ranchero, I paid my own cash ($1000) at 15 going on 16. Rebuilt the motor (first motor rebuild) in a rented garage. Because it was really dirty so why not..

My '77 K20 my uncle gave me to save it from the scrap. I was the only person in my school that drove something with an sm465.

And no there wasn't a fucking loan on it. Ever.

1951 Pontiac Chieftan coupe, 8 cyl inline engine and a 4 speed automatic trans, I bought it from my Dad/Aunts and Uncles for $50.00 in 1976. I was 15 years old. I sold it in about 1985. I once lost a race in it between telephone poles in our little town, the other guy was on foot.

88 k1500 rclb

Got it years ago, I was 13. $2k that I had to pay Dad back. Took me 2 years at $5/hr highschool job while also paying insurance and $2/gallon gas.

Still have it. It's been jumped, smashed, and beaten to death with some CVR10's on a JL500. I must have put 200k on it, several 700r4's, drove it till I was 24. Got laid in it a few times, but I think that was 100% me and had nothing to do with the smashed up sheetmetal and static-x pounding on the stereo.

Currently it needs a map sensor and some injectors. Took the motor apart in 2010, just put it back together last year.
My 11yr old is helping clean up space in the garage while we put the sub-box back in with a free mtx 800x1 amp and an Orion 100x2 for the infinity kappa 4x6's. Stole the old Alpine from Grandpa's Jeep, as he needs Bluetooth now.

He used to think it was junk, but when I told him he was free to drive it so long as he fixed it he was interested. When I told him that's what all the stereo stuff in the garage came from he was hooked.

1968 Chevrolet SS El Camino 396, Turbo 400 trans.
Baby shit brown in poorly restored condition, used as a ranch truck
Got it in 1978
I paid $800 for it, cash money I earned working a paper route before school and as a gas station assistant manager after work.

What was your first vehicle and did you pay for it or did Mommy and Daddy?

Who Paid for it I did, from lawn mowing and working Sizzler, paid $1400. It needed work, took me all summer to figure out how to get the front hub assembly off since I had to replace the bearings. The Dana 44 had a slight interference, was working on it on a cool morning and it came apart! Perfect, could complete my repair.
How old was it when you got it? 14 years
How old were you when you got it? 15, maybe 16
Do you still have it? No, sold it many years ago. Wasn’t good for wheeling

Pics?

Bought the car with my money, parents insisted us kids buy a fixer so we could learn to fix. Sure learned a lot, skills have served me well.

1983
Chevy Suburban 1500 2wd 6.2
Dad bought it new in 83 I bought it in 94 kind of. Paid about 75% before I had to do a head gasket. Got sold soon after. Dad kept the sale money and that was about what I owed left.
No pics handy
Kinda wish I still had it.
Had plans to SAS it but never got to it, thankfully because I was going to put a D44 in it:homer:

Had an 82 Datsun King Cab, Grandpa gave it to me for my 16th Bday. Wasn't worth much but it was freedom... Was not fast but it landed flat when jumping RR tracks. Like this only mine had a Maaco green paint job. Haven't seen many like it since.

63 Plymouth Valiant,225 Slant Six
I got it in lieu of money when worked for the family business.I was 14 when I started, and got the car when I was 15 1/2.(1972)Parents already owned it,but they didn't want to just give it to me.
1st accident in it was about 4 months after I got it,driving down a narrow back road behind a truck,he turned on his right turn signal,I pulled to the left to go around him and he decided to actually turn left.Got it fixed,Dad decided to paint it a taxi yellow. Not real happy about that.
2nd accident,I was working in Baldwin Park at Altmans RV center and lived in Diamond Bar.Heading home SB on Nogales Rd just north of the 60 freeway I was hit head on as I went over the train tracks by a drunk driver doing about 50mph.That was the first of 3 times that I have been hit by a DD.That,of course, was the end of the taxi yellow 63 Plymouth Valiant.

1971 Monte Carlo, 402 and TH400, parents bought it for $1200 in 1978. I built a 396 for it and installed a Muncie 4 speed. I traded it for a 1968 SS396 Chevelle that I built a 427 and 4 speed to swap in. I put over 100k miles on the Chevelle afterwards before I sold it.

My first vehicle was a 1978 Jeep CJ-5, I was 14 the jeep was 22. Family friend owned it and offered it to me for $2,000, I literally got a job that week at the local gas station. I asked my mom for a loan on the jeep and she made me save up $500 first, then she fronted the $1500 and I paid her $50 a week out of my paycheck (I made $80 a week) until it was paid off. I still have the jeep to this day. It's going NOWHERE, it's mine until one of us dies!

Pic of it about 3 months after I got it.

Details: It was the family hauler (5 kids in a blended family) Dad and second wife split my senior year. I came back for Christmas leave from the Army and paid his STBX $1500 for the non-running Sub (carb issues). Meanwhile, my same-age stepbrother was given the 1968 Corvair, and my 2-year younger stepbrother was given the 73 Buick Apollo (it was my grandfather's car, I bought that car off him in 2004 and am now resto-modding it).
Pics? Yeah, right. Just picture a work-truck Sub of that era with no tint, and it was #57 Colonial Yellow (aka cheese yellow) so it looked more like a school bus.

93 GMC C1500. Was my grandfather's. I busted my ass at the grocery store for almost a year to buy it off my folks. I saved every bit I had. When I had enough, it was gifted to me. But, the money I had saved went to insurance and I think it needed tires or some other fairly large expense.

Got it when I was 15 so it was a few year old. Ended up up with several other vehicles. Eventually I ended up giving it to my cousin who drove it for many more years. Nice truck too. Grampa took great care of it. I beat it up a bit, though. Put a massive stereo system in it along with a Flowmaster and slap/ladder bars (no idea, don't ask). Got a pic of it at my home computer.

This was my second vehicle:

Also a 1993. Had a lot of fun in that. Had it for years. Smashed the every living shit out of it. Went through about five transmissions. The rear frame started getting soft and was rotting away. Funds were dry, I had no one to wheel with, and I had to sell it. Lady came over, gave me full asking price without even looking at it. Bought it for her husband.

Few years later I found her on Facebook and asked her about it.

Totally went through it. Rebuilt motor, frame was repaired, the lift, and everything. They said it was the best purchase they ever made. Now and then I reach out to them about buying it back, but they keep saying no way.
