I currently have a 22re on propane 5 speed and duals 4.7 in the rear. My transmission started making a significant bearing noise leaving me at a crossroads.

I like the reliability / simplicity of the 22re on propane but the lack of power and shuttling propane bottles kinda sucks.

I have been considering a repower and have a 350 core that I could build and use along with a lomax 205 t-case that I got awhile back with intentions of some day using it in a build.

My question is do I take the truck under the knife and go V-8 and lomax or rebuild the 5 speed and not take the truck out of service for however long a drivetrain swap would take me.

Lastly if I go V-8 do I get an adapter and use the toy cases or will the 3.1 of the lomax be deep enough after wheeling low gears for the last 15 years?

3x the front #?
Yup big dawg

V8 w/accompanied drive train.

Replace tranny with a w56. Or r15xx
Light and nimble.
Lessn of course it is a desert rig

If you go V8, just don't use the Toy cases.

Total $$$ will be a lot more on V8 conversion, no doubt.

i am on this same debate, last year i was gonna do the v8, i have the LS in the yard(still in yukon) 2 np205 tcases, one np241 and a turbo 350, but my entire front end was built around a 22r, for me it feels like a complete redo of all the engine tubing and everything, so i put a turbo on my 22r with propane, now this is fun, more power, sound great and more power. hahaha try a turbo.....:beer::beer:

yes turbo the 22re, your on propane,

now its not v8 torque and HP, but it has alot of smiles per mile, and super legit, check out MR Stubbs how to turbo a 22r on the other site that not be named. :homer:

it fits in the engine bay, nothing crazy needs to be done , adds no weight really. did i mention its also great talking about around the camp fires.....:beer:

Since you've already got won tons I would lean towards the v8 swap. Throw a turbo 350 behind it? I know nothing nothing abou the lomax however.

Depending how often you wheel should determine how long you want the truck down.

How bout this? You get the tranny fixed which really shouldn't cost all that much and build up the chevy drive train over time and when it's all ready you do the swap.

A turbo sounds appealing as well, I am now starting to consider that for my rig...

Grab a used trans or fix it yourself. If you really want the V8. Start rebuilding it and collecting parts. You'll be well over $10k into the swap if you buy mostly new parts.

For the love of god do not put a mullet motor in there.

Sounds like fix the transmission and add turbo is the common answer.

Thanks for the input.

I don’t need crazy HP but holding highway speeds would be nice😂

I'd kill to just climb an ascent without grabbing 2-3 gears!
Wanders off looking for stubbs notebook...

Add some elevation and the poor 22re just hates itself. I had to use 2.28 low to climb red mountain pass😂

My axles were locked and geared from a previous project before I put them in the Toyota. I have a 14 bolt so no 7.17’s. Not sure how much of a difference going from 4.56 to 5.39 would make. I have a feeling it would still be a turd

I think I am going to give the turbo a try and see how much of a difference it makes.

i will tell you this, do some good reading, nothing makes since at first, but it does after reading it few times. i have been meaning to do a walk around of my set up and now i have an excuse to do that. i have a vid of my first run with the turbo and a a few later after i have it tuned. i love it and its smiles per hour...... air fuel ratio is what i was talking about in the first vid where i say i dont like the numbers, turns out i had the sensor for wide band O@ to close to the turbo, re read the direction and put it 18 inches away and bam got the reading i wanted.
