So to start with I know slightly less the 0 about firearms in general... and this is the 2nd sks ive ever touched.

I aquired this sks and was mostly intrigued by the serial number being stamped into the side of the wood stock.

Also is it normal for these to be slathered in what seems to be parts store grease? And how do I release the bolt once locked back?

It's cosmoline. You will need to take the rifle all the way apart and get it cleaned off.
Especially the firing pin channel in the bolt. In SKS the firing pin can get stuck forward and cause a slam fire.
Hopefully you got a decent deal on it. They used to be $75 back int he 90s.

Looks to be the military version rather than the export version.
Just clean it up and enjoy it for what it is. Don't bother trying to put an optic or a 30round mag on it. Waste of time and money.
There are 20round Chinese fixed mags that do work as well as the 10rounders, but I still wouldn't bother messing with it.

What can I tell you about this SKS? That you might be slightly racist... :flipoff2:

Last "Chink" SKS I handled felt like it had a very gritty two stage trigger. First stage was about two miles of uphill gravel road long followed by a second stage (or break) that needed about 40 lbs of pull, no joke. Absolutely, the worst trigger I could imagine, EVAR. Rifle was more dangerous as a blunt force weapon than an actual firearm.

Clean the bore and see if it's dark, typical of ComBloc milsurp. I bought a few Romy AK parts kits where the outside of the barrel had a better finish then that of the bore because of the corrosive primers and poor maintenance discipline. All the furniture, too, had been serialized (having serialized furniture is nothing special/unique). If the bore is acceptable get a box of the cheapest steel cased ammo and see how it shoots. An SKS is better than no rifle at all but, sometimes, only by this much ><.

What kind of worthless guns?

There is a tab in front of the bolt face that locks it open on a empty magazine. You have to pull the bolt back and push it down with your finger and slowly release the bolt at the same time or open the magazine from the bottom and rack the bolt.
Ill try to get pictures later..
From memory

Old Long barrel single shot 12g
Modern ruger 30.06
Old german .22 revolver
.25 rimfire rifle
Jc higgens .22
410 single shot
Chineese sks

And I think a few others

Be sure to pull the bolt and bolt carriage out, take it apart and clean it and the firing pin or you could get a slam fire. They are prone to that if not cleaned. Its pretty easy to clean.

I just swapped one over to an ATI stock and sure enough the firing pin was stuck in the fire position.

I've had SKS's before and for a long time they were cheap to shoot. It's a 30 caliber and I know many that use them to deer and hog hunt with.

I've fired a few SKS rifles. They always felt awkward to me. If I acquired a military version in what appears to be unfired condition, I would keep it in the safe as a conversation piece, after cleaning it.

Being a spiker Chinese tells me it may be a pre-93 import. After the import ban, they came in without bayonets, and it became verboten to add one, but most people I know don’t give a fuck. Clean the cosmo out of it and get some cheap stripper clips and enjoy it. I have one I’ve not shot in at least 10 years.

You did really good for 1K. Chinese SKSs are now going for $400-500.
Clean all the cosmoline off and shoot it some. Stripper clips take a bit of practice to get good at, but they are fun and somewhat cheap to shoot.
Since you're in the PRK they are a good option for a semiauto rifle that doesn't fall afoul of the AWB.

If you must mess with it, just change the stock, don't mess with detachable mags or trying to add an optic on the back of the receiver. Unless you drill and tap the receiver, it won't hold zero. Basically a waste of time and money.
I'm down to just 1 Russian SKS I keep to fill the SKS spot in my comblock collection. Enjoy it for what it is, fun to shoot and capable of taking deer sized game.

"I aquired this sks and was mostly intrigued by the serial number being stamped into the side of the wood stock."

???

It looks like it matches the serial number on the receiver, which is expected. What in particular intrigues you ? Nice weapon BTW.

Ive never seen a rifle with ther serial number stamped all big into the stock... and its awkwardly not centered or aligned. Like I said in the op I dont know shit when it comes to guns though so maybe its normal

interested in info on the single shot 410
Lest your curiosity regarding single shot .410 goes unabated, here's some info on a single shot .410. It's an old Ithaca M66 Super Single. The lever breaks it open. My Dad got this for me when I was ~10 years old. There are turkeys on the land here and I can get a landowners permit, no charge, but I can NOT find any .410 three inch mags (probably necessary for turkey). 2 1/2 inch Dove shot are only slightly less rare and still over a buck a round...

i have an old stevens 410 my grandpa kept under the truck seat for years. i used it when he was alive, no trigger guard. i fixed it up some after he died, fashioned a trigger guard on it, oiled the stock and metal parts, still use it to kill snakes and varmints. my kids will get to use it when they are of the right age.

I might be able to scrape up a box of buck if that would work.

I’m no help, but I like my SKS. Stripper clips are easy to use. Mine is reasonably accurate-like pie plate at 100yds. Ammo was cheap.

I do appreciate the offer but privately shipping ammo is, at its easiest, a real bear. If you're able to ship it with minimal effort and no risk on your part I will, most gladly, buy it from you (plus shipping). It probably would be wiser for me and easier for you if I just "bite the bullet" and get a Mossberg 500 (or similar) in 12g.

I could be interested in either shotgun or definitely the 30.06 if you are interested in parting with any of them.
