50 gallon heater
New elements and new thermostats .
Input Power in is good 244v
elements read 12 ohms each
current on top element is 18 amps, let it go for 2 hours and water was still cold top element was still at 18 amps
0 amps at bottom element,as expected til the top one switches over.
Did test the top thermostat on a electric stove and it's switched contacts.
Wires from top to bottom check good

What am I missing?

Was I suposed to wait til Tuesday for my question?

This is not my monkey, I'm just part of the circus.

I will be up there this afternoon looking at it.

Are the inlet outlet pipes hooked up correctly? Other thought would be the dip tube on the inlet has fallen off so cold water is coming in at the top and going directly out the outlet. Is it hot for a moment then cools off quickly as flow continues?

this is the second set of elements in this heater, I'm guy #3 on this guy #2 put the second set in.

I ohmed both elements out they are 12 ohms each, also checked wire continuity from the disconnect to everything.

tank was filled before turning on , this is not our first rodeo, this is a resort with 100 plus cabins , I have already changed 6 water heaters and dozen or so heaters with elements.

Inlet pipes were checked they are correct according to guy #2 I was there when he checked, I'm short he is tall and could see the markings.

I did find one heater at the resort that was plumbed wrong when changing it out, it lasted its life plumbed like that with no one bitching.

"You can't pull 18A and not have some heat being developed" exactly what i was thinking

Tested the thermostat on the kitchen stove it did what it was supposed todo.

Dip tube is the most plausible at this point .....I'll pull elements and peek inside and attempt to pull tube,

Rough month for water heaters.
year .......seasonal resort......shitty water .... at seasonal startup everything was checked a week in / first month in shit started failing, mostly running with no new issues.

nothing here is to code , throw that shit in there .....one water heater I put in was a little fat even after removing door trim, 2 feet kicking it into the closet fixed that, told guy #2 he needs to find a new job in the next 10-15 years before that on fails again.

Not the dip tube

removed everything and put it back together , still doing weird shit.

top thermostat does not clip in too good but is solid against the tank.

guy #2 will be back tomorrow he can deal with it.

Is that some of M92PV4U 's hair in the water heater as insulation?

I had the relief valve open while emptying/ filling went out to the truck for needle nose pliers, it filled fast was all over the floor as I was getting back in the door., so much for putting a pan under it and beating the shit out of it for the drain valve.

The replacement is in the truck will get swapped out tomorrow.
Them thing getting expensive, think I paid $350 few year ago, been paying over $500 lately, not my $$ I just provide the cheap labor.

It was a leak on the hot water line in the crawl space.......belly crawlspace, I was off today guy #2 took care of it, critter chewed thru PEX.

This was after installing a new water heater that had same symptoms.
