VSS 4l80e holley terminator

So I have my Toyota with an LS and a 4l80e to a 203/205. Wired with Holley Terminator max which controls my transmission as well. My trans doesn’t have a vss sensor since it’s a late model 4l80e, which ran vss output off the tcase. My question is what can I do to run a vss so that my trans shifts like it should in 4wd?? I was told if I ran it off my tcase, it would not detect correctly when I am in Low range and not shift… I really don’t want to take my transmission apart and install a tone ring in it but looks like I might have to but then again what about when I’m in 4wd? Any recommendations on what have people done before? I’m sure I’m not the only who’s ran into this issue before. TIA!

Theres 1 or 2 on the trans body and one on the tcase (4wd) or output shaft (2wd)

So the trans has a turbine speed sensor and the other port in the rear has a plug but no sensor. I could run a 40 pulse sensor on the 205 speed O cable port but my concern is when I am in low range it’s not going to sense the correct speed

Then all you need is the vss at the 205.

Okay but when I’m in 4low will it sense it and allow it to shift properly?

Thats part of the reason for the multiple sensors.

TermX doesn't have a provision for this.

You can add a second VSS to a 4x4 4l80e, but you need to disassemble the trans and press a tone ring on the output shaft. I did this for my build. Shifts fine in low and double low without the ECU knowing it is in 4 low. Or swap in a 2wd trans with the VSS already there....

This is the answer I was looking for. Someone who has been there already. Thank you. I will disassemble my trans and add a tone ring in it. Sucks it was just rebuilt but it’s a lesson learned. Hopefully it will help someone in the future as well.

Might give AA a call. I’m running an X max and used this setup. Came with the tone ring and sensor. Computer shifts the trans in H or L. Admittedly, I think it shifts a little too fast at WOT in low. I did increase the 1-2 shift point some and it helped. Could probably increase it more but works fine in normal scenarios. Hope it helps.

Running a speed sensor in the transfer case of the 205 instead of in the transmission would make it shift funny is what I’ve read. Due to the gear reduction when in low range. Is this true? Anyone have success running it like that? Factory ran it on the tcase..

Hi low switch, plus tow haul switch, at least 3 shift maps to tune.

This is the answer I was looking for. Someone who has been there already. Thank you. I will disassemble my trans and add a tone ring in it. Sucks it was just rebuilt but it’s a lesson learned. Hopefully it will help someone in the future as well.

This is a far better option versus a requirement to run a VSS equipped tcase, or using Novak/AA parts. You should be able to write 2 or more shift maps to work with your tcase setup. Half the fun is tuning, I recommend HP tuners.

edit, I see you are running Holley, you should be able to write maps with their software.

Interesting that the factory ECU has more tunability vs. the holley gear...No real reason to use holley IMO
