VPN ?

Cryptostorm, fuck the rest. Cheap and they don't keep or sell any data.

If you're looking into it for actual privacy reasons a VPN isn't as secure as it used to be and all the big ISPs can still see what you're doing on their networks.

For now I just need to book some flights and they keep jacking the prices every time I do.

As a Net Eng, I'm curious why people are so worried about using a client-based VPN. I get the fact that you can 'source' from another location for the purposes of Netflix/YouTube ,etc. But why else?

Things to keep in mind with a 'VPN':

VPN just stands for Virtual Private Network. It is an encrypted secure connection over the internet intended to allow remote computers to connect to a network somewhere else without paying for a dedicated line. Businesses and other organizations use them all the time to connect remote offices or remote workers back into their corporate network.

Why do you care about this when all you want to do is have your IP address pop up in some random country elsewhere so you can watch sports or go to sneaky sites or whatever? Because it's good to keep in mind that all of your internet browsing isn't suddenly cloaked, it's just moved to whatever VPN company's network you're using and then going out to the internet from there.

Basically(TLDR)- make sure you trust whatever company you're using as a VPN not to do bad stuff with your data, because they will have it if they want to.

Thats why I said for now. I'm moving to Thailand soon and will need it there too.
If you want a US based connection set up your own before you leave. Do you have any friends or family that trust you? Set up a VPN connection on their router/gateway or put a shitbox computer in their closet with an internet connection and connect through it.

What he said. Caveat that not all VPNs are actually encrypted nor do they always protect against location fishing. Most today are TLS TUN (L3) because those are the easiest to setup without affecting your local network.

Now if you really want to hide your location having your remote network bridged via a TAP adapter to a remote network is a better choice. Also helps to turn the WiFi off and not have any mobile phones on said network because of AGPS. I did this in my Toy hauler during Covid remote work to head off any of the more nebulous policies about where you had to be.

Most sophisticated sites will simply ask the browser to leverage location services these days instead of the originating IP address. So for the most part they aren’t very effective against pricing strategies.

You can also fuck with the pricing algorithms by using browser emulation and or a Brave browser incognito with Tor. That shit is free.

Follow on - most browsers have the capability to change the user agent. Your personal research is to try each agent and see what has the lowest price.

Chrome / Edge / Firefox / Safari

On Brave:
Developer Tools> More> Network Conditions> User agent

Web filter bypass when connecting to guest networks lol. Can't filter what you can't see.

I delete the airlines cookies every time I go to book or check prices and they usually come in lower. When I am about to pull the trigger on tickets I'll delete them again and they come down a little more maybe half of the time.

Getting a VPN is a smart move, especially for online safety. I was in your shoes not too long ago, feeling a bit lost with tech. I started looking for options, and it turned out that paying for one was definitely worth it.

I ended up going with NORD, I use it here in the states but it won't matter to me until I get to Thailand really.
It made no difference in airline prices fwiw

Fuck Nord. They had a massive security breach a few years ago and waited weeks before they told their customers and even then only did it because it got to the point they couldn't hide it anymore. They also have publicly stated they'll comply with data requests from government entities despite advertising that they don't log any customer informaiton.

If you can't explain the uses for a VPN, including what it doesn't do then you need to do more research first. They are super high margin products so they can spend a lot of money on misleading advertising.

They have their place. But its not what you hear the youtubers talking about.

ExpressVPN here. They even have a Firestick app for changing regions if I want to watch a blacked out baseball game

Computer tard here as well. I'm not sold on the VPN concept. Tried it once. Seemed weird connecting to servers in other countries. Couldn't trust it enough to feel comfortable. Seems sketchy as fuck.

I'm on nord but I won't be using them again after my term is up (I bought a year).

Biggest annoyance is how bad torrenting is through them, and they won't allow you to seed. I don't use it a lot but when I want it to work it should work.

For quick and easy now, Winscribe works well. Limited to 10gb/mo on the free account, but that's plenty to get what you need now. Jus launch the desktop client and pic a server and that's it.

I have a separate Wifi network here that's routed through another free VPN. It works fine when I need to beat a location blocker, but I've noticed it seems to throttle....not sure if it's a time or data limit thing.

I don't watch youtube, except for racing vids.

I need it in Thailand so all the 2 step verifications can happen. I don't care if I can explain its uses outside of that
