What's new

Vintage aircraft photo thread

I did quite a bit of work on this one and got a couple rides in it before it went in wheels up.

I worked for John on and off for over 10 years. He was the definition of adventurer. Even into his 90' he'd say fuck it, hop in his model T and drive halfway across the country.
Hey, I'm in that book!

I helped recover that Stearman off of I-70 in Vail. I was 10 or 11. John called my dad asking for help so we rented the truck and headed up the hill from Denver. If I remember right, there's a pic of the airplane being disassembled at the gas station, and I'm elbow deep disconnecting something so we could load it in a Uhaul. Arse would have been proud...

My kids just expect me to say "I took an airplane apart at that gas station" everything time we drive through Vail. I guess it isn't a cool story anymore.

Yup, I unloaded it out if the truck at Mira Mar. That whole deal was fucked up. I got to go for a ride with Victor in John's Pitts stunt plane. That was a bad plan........

So it made it, good to hear.

From what I remember hearing while loading here, Viktor saved the day. Trying to get a 220HP Stearman over Vail Pass was not a good plan that day. After things started to come unwound, Viktor took over so it was at least right side up when it hit the highway.

Victor was the Russian national aerobatic champion several years running. The old guy with him was supplying money, not talent. The plan never was to go over the pass but dipshit wanted photos. There were several lawsuits over the whole deal.

Local accident at the old plane airfield-

I'm a sucker for old taildraggers with round engines. I had a 5 year plan to buy a Beech 18, on year 6 I was getting close. Then one day I ran in to a buddy who flew one. He loved it other than the fuel bill, 50 GPH!!! I knew it was a lot, but that just didn't make sense for my mission. I figured I'd be spending $15k/year just on gas, without even buying a light bulb or spark plug. I got over that dream for now, maybe down the road.

Just need a partner.... 😆

I walked through the Naval Air Museum today. I'm not convinced this is a real R4D, it looks like a normal DC3 to me, but it could be. This one had skis on it, so that may be why I don't see gear doors like all the other R4D's I've seen, but it is missing the square tail. Those might be R2000 engines though, my eye isn't that sharp on these.

This bird burned up in a nasty crash in the last 6-12 months. Somewhere in eastern CO or western KS dodging weather when maybe he shouldn't have been. Super sad deal in the CO general aviation scene. He had rebuilt a few birds to show winners at Oshkosh.

This is him with another one he rebuilt. I'm building one just like it, but probably not as pretty.

Here are a couple we finished last summer, Bonnie the only flying p47 razorback that built at the Evansville plant ( if I remember correctly) And Thunderbird a p51 C model Mustang once owned Jimmy Stuart a that has a long history of racing and record setting mostly in the hands of the speed queen Jackie Cochran among others. I will try to add others as I have time, for those that follow this stuff its not fair that I don't try and share a few things.
