What's new

Vehicle prices that make you say WTF?

I read an article last week that made my jaw drop. Over 30% of households making $150k+ are living paycheck to paycheck with no meaningful way to save money.

$150K annual income is the new working poor apparently. Madness.
That's barely above poverty level for a family of 4 in Palo Alto, CA

You think those articles don't take adjust for geographical cost of living?
That would still be good money where I am at.

I call BS on this "statistic" Living paycheck to paycheck means they spent too much on many things. Sure it's paycheck to paycheck when you have $800-1k in car payments, $2500 house payment, $1k in student loan payback, $1200, childcare, etc.

Wife and I combined make just shy of $200k. We manage to save $1500/month (Not including 401k contributions at 8-10%). Anyone living paycheck to paycheck at $150k (outside very few metro areas) is doing it because they spent frivolously prior to getting to a $150k income.

Here, prices are dropping...but they are only coming off the already ridiculous pricing that has been going the past 2 years. It's like a Jeweler having a 50-75% off sale on stuff they already marked up 200%

Looks like the F150 Raptor or some other "upgrade" is the new WTF leader around here.

$2500 house payment is nothing. Ours is $2100 and it's not anything fancy in the least (15 year fixed at 2.75%.)

I wouldn't be so quick to brush aside $150k as working poor. It sounds ludicrous sure, but there is a massive difference between $150k in CT versus $150k in upstate rust belt NY for instance.

How many people build their "empire" on a foundation of debt?
"Yeah, I can make that monthly payment!" :homer:

Dont under estimate how many folks are house poor

It's not hard, a 400K note is $3000/m at today's rates. Add in property taxes, insurance, and utilities, and that's ~$50k a year out the door. a starter home is 400k in the suburbs, 500k for a crack house in Austin.

if you make $100k a year, take home is ~78k (in Texas).

That's ~$2300 a month for a vehicle/insurance, food, health insurance, entertainment and you're expected to somehow save money and not eat a bullet from being broke.

Six figures is a poor person today.

When did these get so expensive? I knew they were a couple of 100k, but not three-quarter of a million dollars.

But property taxes in tx are insane. I have friends paying upwards of $30k a year.

“But no income tax!” Doesn’t matter when the income stops and a person is trying to retire… but needs $50k/year to rent property from the state

Noticed 2005-2008 Porsche 997's are cooling off quickly. A few months ago they were selling for 55-70K and are now at under 40 for a S six speed with $40,000 miles. Inflation is finally hitting the upper middle class.

50k.... 6 years old 250k miles

It does come with a trailer as well, but yea, still...

Yeah, but how many of those are living within their means vs living in a McMansion shitbox, driving a new $100k truck, with a new $70k boat and RV in the driveway and a bunch of other bullshit all financed at 30%? I'd guess a strong portion of that 30% are the latter.

Wail........I thought that escalades were like 120k max

160k MSRP :lmao::lmao:
expensive but impressive. V does a 12.something second 1/4 mile, 4.4 sec 0-60 while weighing 6200lbs. I tried to convince my BIL to get one, but they chose a Range Rover with a $50k market adjustment on top of MSRP instead.

Why? Probably running down the highway at 50%-75% power.
Probably easier on the truck than miles running oilfield roads and then sitting idling 24/7 when it gets there...

It's like pulling a sail. I bet that foot was in it the whole time.

I was also unaware that the only used trucks were hotshots and oil field to compare. Only a fool buys either.
