In October 1943 an American landing force off Samar found itself about to be slaughtered by one of the largest Japanese naval forces of WWII, after the main American fleet had been deceived into chasing a non existent Japanese force far from there, leaving the vulnerable troop ships nearly defenseless. The tiny escort units threw themselves against the Japanese with such suicidal ferocity that the Japanese thought they were being attacked by the main American fleet and withdrew without attacking the very vulnerable troop ships. Among the heavy losses of that day was the USS Johnston. The wreck was just found:

Commander Evans was a warrior and a boyhood hero of mine. He definitely was a big reason the Japanese didn't press home their attack.

How unfair it is that when people read modern pieces about Evans being Indian, they think he's being mentioned as part of some affirmative action scheme because of his ethnicity. Evans and his crew easily make the pantheon of American military heroes on their own merits. A lone destroyer repeatedly charging a whole Japanese battle fleet... Until they got blown to pieces.

He was an American sailor and the best destroyer captain ever. And it's a good thing for the landing forces that every one of those sailors fought their little destroyers and destroyer escorts like battleships.

That is awesome that they found it. I read about the Tin Can Destroyer battle of Samar often.

Reading 'the last stand of the tin can destroys' right now.

Taffy 3 and the battle of smar are an amazing story of a battle against the odds and self sacrifice. If you have been on a fletcher class and an Iowa class its amazing the balls of the men on that ship.

Long live the memory of captain Evans and the men of the uss johnston.

What a generational divide. Ship fulls of men throwing themselves against overwhelming odds.

While today's police officers piss their pants as kids get slaughtered.

Plenty of worthless people back then too.
