Ultimate Adventure 2022

So, you're saying you're a pussy :grinpimp:
Sure:flipoff2:

I was 1500 miles from home in a 40 year old jeep j10 and no trailer.

I was wheeling for the week, not the day like the UA is supposedly all about.:smokin:

IIRC only a couple of rigs made it through with no damage and mine was one of them. I remember Fred Perry was keeping track of all the carnage.

well I think one of the cool things about UA is that it is NOT a race. It's wheeling for the week, not the day.

I remember there was exactly one obstacle that myself a many others didn't do. It was an offshoot from the main trail that went up hill and traversed a very steep side hill right above the trail. It wasn't 'hard' per se, just extremely off camber. No way can you do it without having a winch to keep you from rolling. I was like 'what is the point here' and didn't do it.
Exactly.

Go back to watch the old rock bouncering videos and you’ll see what I’m referring to.
You also need the token "way too drunk at 11am" guy stumbling around telling you how you are doing everything wrong who hasn't had a rig in 20yrs and no one in the group knows who he is or where he came from. Those dudes seem to just appear out of the woods in evrey recovery situation at a southern offroad park.

Man it’s like you’ve been on nearly every single trip we’ve ever been on!:lmao:

So how we get the field? Are there even 20 people on here who actually have rigs and still wheel? :flipoff2:
I still have rigs. I still wheel. Though mostly go karts lately until I can finish my jeep. I have a cj5 with a 225 dauntless that I could beat on if it had to be road worthy. Would be a miserable trip on open diffs and 31s though.

Maybe this would deserve another thread talking about old UA rigs and where they are now.

Here is the UA2011 J10 honcho as it is now. Not really now but this pic was taken about a year ago. Last pic I have of it. It sits in my offgrid shop at 8500 feet in Colorado. In the past few years it has not seen ANY pavement (but PLENTY of wheeling here on the mountain). I put a 8274 and a pintle hitch on the rear and used it to haul down all the logs for my log cabin. 30 foot logs. I took a 14 bolt and welded 1.75" tubing with matching H2 wheels/42" Kevlars to make a log trailer. I was able to haul all my logs down and built my offgrid log cabin which I'm living in now.

I changed a few things after UA2011. Junkyard TBI/traction bar and tube doors. It has a AMC 360/nv4500/atlas 4spd.

My plan is to resurrect this rig one day and go wheeling off the mountain.

Wouldn't take much. This thing runs like a raped ape even today.

Since we are talking wheeling, the club I belong to will be holding private event at Field & Forest in Harrisville, NH the weekend of August 4-6. Space is limited but we could probably fit 20 Irates, give or take. The venue is best for buggies on comp tires. Will post a formal invite on here next spring but anybody interested in making the trip can mark their calendars now.

There's nothing hard there. :flipoff2:

I might be interested in that but for my lil buggy on 35's blacks are gonna be about it. Even Lake Trail looks pretty nasty these days.

You're not kidding. At Harlan you can think you're the only group around for a mile, and as soon as someone starts getting rowdy on an obstacle it seems like people just appear out of nowhere to watch.

Climbing up from the Putney side to bring parts to a buddy at the helicopter pad sometime after midnight, we had a headlight come loose and ground out, blowing all the light fuses. After about 2 minutes trying to fix it in the dark a group of ATVs showed up and didn't have the fuse we needed, but had some spade terminals we used to make a pigtail for a Maxi fuse. Back moving in under 5 minutes.

They had heard us coming up the hill from that big junction up top, when it suddenly went dark and quiet they figured something was wrong

One of the things that would be challenging with an IBB UA is parts. I remember people breaking all kinds of parts on UA2011. Parts like knuckles and I think even a transmission. Other stuff too (It's been a while). Somehow, those parts were literally appearing out of thin air and quickly got installed.

I didn't break shit :flipoff2:

The point is, I think the sponsors really stepped up when it came to parts and that is something we would need to think about.
From what I have seen sponsors step up on off the shelf parts. You can have yourself overnighted chromoly axle shafts or hubs and things that a sponsor would have in their shop or showroom.

When it comes to broken transmissions, engines, etc. that’s really where the “cronies” shine. They have all been around the country enough to know someone who has the engine or major part you need. It’s amazing what connections Pewe has. That guy can be in Kansas and in need of a motor and he knows 7 guys in an 150 mile radius with an engine you need.

IBB can mostly cover the latter but not the former.

That was going to be my next recommendation. In a world of tons and 40s it would be cool to have a rig with 35s in the group as the wild card.

So the details seem ironed out. I volunteer myself for an East Coaster. I should be able to get my tire vulcanized by 2023. :lmao:

Looks like I'm welding some spider gears and putting a winch back on that old thing.

Sierra Rock. Crawlers have a group run for a charity every year. 31s on your rig and go wheel Rubicon. Pretty fun run and amazing to see all the myths about how much you need 40 when you run tons.

Yeah but can we trailer from park to park or do we gotta drive like UA?

Without the driving portion its just a lot of wheeling and probable buggy fest. A trip that circles back would help for trailering to the start and home though. The 2 groups is a good idea.

I'd be down for an east coast run, or even southeast region. Run trails through KY, TN, NC, VA. Parks are entertaining but some of the cool trails are still onesie twosie or private.

The other thing with UA is you don't know where it is so you could be going 5min from home or 3,000 miles to AK taking a week off work or 3 to make it happen. Ain't nobody got time or $$$$$ for that... Would love to... but alas have neither the smarts or looks to pull that off.

My idea:

Trailers allowed
Wheeling monday to friday so you have both weekends to drive in and drive out.

My idea is to ride during the day, then trailer out at night. I'm on the fence if this is the better idea, or we should flip it around so we trailer early in the morning and ride after arriving. Each travel leg is about 2h30mn.

Each park offers Cabins so no need to tent camp / rough it out if you don't want to.

The trip is NOT a circle, and direction could be reversed, that wouldn't change anything.

Planning :

Weekend
Arrival
Camp at Stony Lonesome

Day 1
Ride at Stony Lonesome (Cullman AL)
Trailer up to AOP
Camp at AOP

Day 2
Ride at Adventure Offroad Park (South Pittsburg TN)
Trailer up to Windrock
Camp at Windrock

Day 3
Ride Windrock (Oliver Springs TN)
Camp at Windrock

Day 4
Ride Windrock again
Trailer to Harlan
Camp at Harlan

Day 5
Ride Harlan (Putney KY)
Camp at Harlan (Possible to rent out their badass cabin for the night and throw a big party for the end of the ride)

Weekend
Everybody leaves when they want.

I would be willing to organize such a thing, deal with the parks, guide myself (I know most parks) or find guides etc if I can actually get a group of 5 IBB members ready to commit.

I can organize sponsors and media coverage if we decide this is the path we want to follow.

I can make the driving portion happen if it circled back. That wouldn't be so bad. My biggest issue is that i have 40" treps (i would get more road worthy tires for this) and a giant steering ram right up front on the axle:laughing:But plenty of people do it every day, so I'm willing to risk it(if my junk ever gets done:homer:) especially if it was east coast/ south east run. Hell even pacific north west. Fucking Midwest and I'll try to be in as best i can.... west coast is going to be years before i could pull off...
I think just trying to set up yearly regional runs like this may get more interest. Doesn't even have to be ua style at all can be more like a meet and greet while traveling:lmao:either way the idea is good, just have to try to make it for the widest variety of vehicles as possible.

That would be fucking awesome... but alas my ass has lots of work to do if i want in, and i want in:frown:

I agree 100% have done some Toyota and Jeep CJ style gatherings with the same premise and had fun. People need to organize these more.. I need to take my own advice probably. :homer:

Vehicle variety will be an interesting mix and hard to set guidelines. A Samurai on 31-33s, Toyota/Jeep on 33-37s and Full Size on 37-40s have all seemed to play nice on mixed trail rides from experience depending on drivers and trails.

Probably just set forth DBAD guidelines (Dont Be A Dingus) and prepare accordingly. Break up the group at a park to let the buggies go do buggy things and the trail rigs go run trails.

I'm in for fun/games.

I would be more than ok to make "my" routes cater to any style of rigs, as long as the 5 cars coming are similar in terms of level.

I'm NOT making 2 events into 1 to cater to people.

I feel that getting 5 people to hard commit is gonna be impossible anyway.
