Special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday described the insurrection on January 6, 2021, as an “unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy" that was “fueled by lies” told by the former president.
He encouraged Americans to read the entire document.
Trump was indicted on four counts in Smith’s investigation into the aftermath of the 2020 election. The indictment also includes mention of six unnamed and unindicted co-conspirators."It was fueled by lies," Smith said, referring to the insurrection. "Lies by the defendant, targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the US government — the nation's process of collecting, counting and certifying the results of the presidential election."
Smith also indicted the former president at the beginning of June in a separate special counsel investigation regarding classified documents to which Trump pleaded not guilty.
