I'll be spending a week with a cabin and a "jeep wrangler or equivelent" rental car near Truckee.
  1. Where do I need to go?
  2. Best restaraunts in the area?
  3. Fun local things to do that are open?
  4. What's a good trail guide where I can find some easy trails for a rental spec JL? Need to keep it simple, I don't want to buy a rental spec jeep.

Honestly...

I'd be heading out to meadow lake and down Fordyce a little ways.

yup this^

do some dirt road driving, crawling if you dare, next to a great lake, and if youre feeling up to it you can hike and go see a killer trail:smokin:

isnt signal peak trail nearby as well?

gold lake trail is short and easy but its a cool spot

I've got a one track mind. Just the first guide that google threw out, I'm sure there are many more.

My collapsable pole will be packed. :smokin:

I'm in an aircast boot, so hiking is pretty far out of the picture for me.

Thanks for the suggestions. Know of any good trail map websites, apps, etc I can use? I don't remember which ones I liked when I was living in Arizona, but I remeber it took a while to find the good ones.

Haven't been in quite a few years but I think you can still take the tram to the top of Squaw Valley ski resort. Beautiful view from up there.

You might check out Gold Lake up 89. Nice scenic area.

Yep, I'd definitely check out the Lakes Basin. In-town Truckee blows after 1/2 day.

Gold Lake Rd connects 89 in Graeagle to 49 at Bassets.
Down 49 from Bassets are the Kentucky Mine & Downieville.
On the 89 end of it, the Mohawk Valley & Sierra Valley are beautiful.
If you're in Portola & jonesing for real Mexican food, Rico's kicks ass.

Also on a GTFO of Truckee agenda, Scheels sporting goods in Sparks, NV is impressive.

EDIT: there's also a Summit Racing in Sparks if you're looking to hunt hot rod parts

Yes, signal peak is right there too. Fun little trail with a couple decent obstacles. Would probably be a blast in a stockish jeep.

Thanks for the summit and other recomendations. I've been trying to get to the summit store in Ohio for years, but I'm never passing by at the right time. We're flying into Reno, so I think I can make it work.

Depends on his tastes.

I try to avoid population density on vacation & DGAF about casinos; and moonrocks can be packed with douchebags.

About the only time I like a casino is when I'm in vegas. I get bored after shredding $20 in a machine and I've never been good enough at cards to try a table. But watching idiots wreck their shit might be fun!
