Truck Advice: looking at a 2010ish Chevy 2500 6.0L 4l80E

Looking to buy a truck. 2008-2014 range, Chevy 2500, 4WD, extended or crew cab, 6.0L, 4l80E, under 150k miles, $12K-$20K

Im not super familiar with the platform, except for the 6.0L 4l80E combo. What am i looking for? What should i be checking? Thoughts? Planning on putting a baby seat in the back.

Example truck im going to look at: 2012 2500 4wd Crew Cab 6.0L 4l80E 6-1/2 bed 150k miles $17,000 extra clean

My oldest brother has basically what you're after in a 1/2 ton flavor. It's been a great truck. The headlights are just starting to chalk up like all plastic lenses do but mechanically it's been solid.

My personal opinion: save a couple bucks and go with a grandpa clean previous generation like '06 ish. To me the interiors are higher quality and hold up better on the earlier generation. Most people I know that have owned both agree.

If you're just plain not wanting a 15 year old truck I get that. I'd say front end wear parts, steering parts, make sure all of the dash features function. Dashes like to crack on those years as well. Should be a pretty solid truck other than the interior. I don't think the 2500 6.0's got any of the dumb DOD or VVT shit, but that stuff can be a problem if so.

Not sure what the last year of the 4L80E was. But both the 2010 and 2015 I had both had the 6L80E in them. I didn't care for how they shifted. Always seemed like it was in the wrong gear. I ended up trading the 2015 off a few months ago cause the transmission was on it's way out. I was told by a local transmission shop that they changed something in the trans in 2015 and had a lot of issues with them. Other than that I liked both trucks. I did like the 2015 interior better than the 2010. The inside door handles were where they belonged lol Towards the top of the door not down low.

i just looked it up and yes, it is the 6l80. The 4l80E stopped going in GMC trucks in 2006

buddy has one in the range and it's been a good vehicle, rear fenders are starting ti rust out badly though.

Im in the same opinion as the filthy indian. Totalgirlfriends dad has a 07/08 with a 6.0/6l80 and i hate how it shifts in the mountains where we live. Always shifting with every minor throttle motion and grade change. Wont hold a gear for shit. On the highway leter rip. Just dont like it up here.

1 baby seat? Xcab is fine. Maybe 2 baby seats? 4 door only unless driver is 5'1" max. Even in forward facing kid seats,, i can't haul both kids at once in my Xcab.

Had a 2010 crew cab for about 2 years and 50k. Picked it up with around 100K on it.

The interior is mostly plastic. If the dash hasn’t cracked, it’s not a matter of if, but when. I put one of the plastic caps over mine, and it looked decent enough. The dash in my MILs 2011 Tahoe did the same thing.

The driveline in mine was for the most part reliable while I had it. I did have to replace both front wheel bearings, one cv shaft, the passenger side axle seal, but that’s not shocking as I was running a slightly larger tire and had a full replacement front bumper. Never had any engine, transmission, or T-case issues.

I ended up redoing the brake system (new calipers, rotors, and pads) around 135K. I think that was more due to lack of maintenance by the POs than anything.

The factory steering leaves a lot to be desired, especially with larger tires. That can easily be addressed though. Mine needed new TREs and sway bar end links when I picked it up. I had plans to upgrade the steering system using components from Kyrptonite, but sent the truck down the road before that happened.

The 6.0 is good for between 9-13 MPG in my experience. It wasn’t atypical for me to average between 8-9 mpg doing stop and go. BIL had a stock 2011 2WD and a 2016 4WD in the same configuration. He would occasionally crack 15-16 on the highway in his 2wd, 4wd was 13-15 if lucky.

You'll probably be happy with that. I bought a '12 CCSB 1500 3 years ago with 250k+ on it and have been quite happy with it. Bought it in MO with zero rust and well cared for. Aside from gas and oil I've had to put a battery and a wheel bearing in it.
There are things about gmt800's that I prefer over this truck but overall I'd rather have a 900. This has more creature comforts, drivers seat hasn't blown out, integrated brake controller is nice, I don't personally have any issues with the interior aside from the black on the hvac button starting to come off. I've got no cracks.

For me I'll take the 6Lx0e over any 4Lxxe I've had/driven. The extra gears and the way it shifts are much more suited to my driving style, I use the manual override a lot. Really works well with the VVT for trailer braking, you pick lower gears and it phases the cam for extra engine braking.

I've been looking for almost the same truck you are to pull my gooseneck and was finding 200k mile 2010+ gmt900 2500hds for under $10k last fall but not anymore.

I think 2010 was the year that it went to metric bolt pattern, higher tow rating, and the tranny got some upgrades.

To be honest, I've been using this half ton to tow some fairly heavy stuff and it's done quite well. About as good as my '01 6.0 2500. The extra gears and VVT make a big difference.

I've been considering selling my gooseneck and getting a bumper pull deckover and abandoning my search for a 3/4 ton for awhile. I like the nice ride and 22mpg of the half ton.

IDK, as long as it isn't white that's a fairly reasonable price from what I've seen.

White=ex-oilfield and should be priced accordingly.
