I have been traveling some, quite a bit. Somewhat looking at traveling to Greece next summer. I want to see Athens, but don't need to see every major tourist destination.

Anyone have any must see places off the beaten path? Must do activities? Cool stories?

Haven't decided for sure yet. But thinking about going there next year.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Plan to spend as little time in Athens as possible. The islands are diverse, but you want to avoid cruise ship days as much as possible.

July to mid-August is jam packed with european tourists.
Stay off the beaten path, look for the small secluded places away from tourist destinations.
The country and it's people are awesome, the migrants and tourist sheep not so much

I did most of the major tourist destinations in Italy last summer. We traveled by car. You could hardly see Trevi fountain much less get next to it. I hear you, but it is what it is. That’s when I have time so maybe I’ll go hang out on a quiet island or something.

Check out the island of Crete. The town of Chania is a popular tourist area, but still worth checking out.

There's a lot of ruins on the island that are worth checking out. ~$500 gets you a car and fuel and into most of the places on the island.

Was just there in June. Athens and it's people are awesome. Very busy city though. The Parthenon was pretty rad. Amazing food and cheap.

Santorini was amazing. Rent a quad or side by side and explore.

I did Athens in October, the weather was great and not real crowded. I spent 3 days looking at all ruins in Athens, I’m sure I didn’t see it all. I hope to get back for some island hopping.

Pro tip, cash is king in Greece. Taxes are crazy so cash buys you a nice discount at most places.
