Travel Trailers aka I can’t afford land/cottage thread because I am the poors

Are they cheapest in Indiana since their built there? Any place you recommend buying? Been thinking about moving into a camper lately.
Not always due to dealer markup, but the farther away you go, the more expensive they get due to delivery fees.

They arent really any cheaper here. Where are you located at? Feel free to send me a PM if you want.
The problem you will have is the dealer you want may not carry the brand you are looking for. Also, many dealers will not work on stuff they dont sell, so if you drive a few hours to buy one, you may have to drive a few hours for warranty work. They arent like car lots.

One thing I learned is the maintenance schedule is not possible to maintain a warranty. If you look at the schedule on every part and there are a ton of individual parts, you’ll learn that it’s designed so it’s not possible to really do. I did the math years ago on mine to pay a dealer to complete the fully maintenance schedule to have documentation for warship claims and it was thousands a year with 8 dealer drop offs.

I don't have a preferred dealer, I'm currently in Pennsylvania hanging out with my family and healing from a lifetime of oil field work so I figured if you knew a place I could swing by on my way back west.

General RV is pretty decent. Take your time on your walkthrough, you hold the cards until you sign.

How about a wall tent? I went from a 2019 Forest River xlr toy hauler to a canvas wall tent on a platform and liked it more. I mean, no a/c, but i had solar lights, an charger for phone, you could probably do a pv system or propane for a fridge, coleman stove. Little wood stove, was alright. Site selection is more important for sure.

You could sell it to the kids as going "camping". Everyday were camping, yay! I bet with everything its still cheaper than an rv by alot, and can be packed up and put in a truck bed.

My project back home is a 93 bluebird schoolbus to setting for long term off grid camping. Thats built a lot better than the toy hauler.
Two wall tents. Put the kids in one, or every night rotate somebody into the second one solo for a peaceful night.

I've got 2 boys, 7 and 9. I can't imagine having them in a 20' trailer, wall tent, yurt, whatever for an extended time with me. Love my kids, also love my privacy. Hell, when we go camping, we give them their own tent. A cheap one.

Just FYI
Airstream is owned by Heartland now, that should tell you what you need to know. I work for an RV manufacturer, most of the parts on all of them come from Lippert.

The last part is what always gets me when people start comparing brands. Maybe the QC or warranty is better from one brand to another, but they all use the same components made by a handful of companies (Lippert, Patrick, etc.). They all employ the same line employees (that frequently jump ship from one company to another). And they all pay piece-rate on the line (the more trailers you build, the more you get paid). There's simply no way one manufacturer is going to be all that better than another with the same inputs.

I agree.

Now do cars. :flipoff2:

This'll give you an idea of what you're in for. They're all the same. A lot of them use Amish/Mennonites in Elkhart Indiana. They're pressured to work quickly.

Following up on this thread as I have binge watched some airstream reno vids on YouTube. I didn’t realize they are just as shitty.

Wrapped up as a Cadillac on a J-Body frame

There are a lot of mixed prices from overpriced gut jobs to okay $30k is a lot but it’s pull ready (or appears to be)

This is an interesting thread...... GF took in a couple of loosers and is allowing them to camp out on the horse ranch (tents are out of sight). The women is a fucking mental case because of head trauma and is "supported" by her looser son. She is in her mid 60's and is a damm hard worker if given a simple task. She would be great at cleaning up construction sites or maybe a helper of sorts. She is damm good with our horses; that would be enough for her to earn her keep.
GF is considering giving her a small travel trailer and giving her son the GTFO boot.
Never thought that I would be hosting homeless people.:eek::eek::eek:
They’re not homeless now that they’ve found a home.

Camper trailers are a rip off $$$$$$$$$ now days . And they are loaded full of $10,000 worth of electronic computer crap that you dont need or want, and that crap is just going to break and fail

I'm going to be selling my FIL 35 ft +/- 5th wheel around January 2020 jayco something somewhere in the 36k +/-.

Has a 08 or 09 Chevy 2500 diesel to go with it 25k +/-

Location is south Carolina

Go big or go home.

I’ve become hung up on payload numbers. I don’t want too much truck for the 1% time I’d be pulling something but “go big or go home” mentality makes this difficult.

99% of the time I could get away with a Gladiator or Tacoma.

I can’t believe an XJ has 100# less payload than a 2023 Power Wagon

The obvious solution is at least 2 trucks…one with 8 lug nuts and a little around town truck.

If you want a trailer that can actually go down the road and not fall apart in 5yrs look at race trailers with living quarters instead of a camper. My Continental Cargo race trailer is built like a brick shithouse.....

If you have no plan on hauling toys, it would be very easy to add a master bedroom and a living area to a trailer like this.

Looks fancy! 30ft?

🤣
Best compromise I have read is stripper 2500 Ram (I’d like an 8 speed) and swap in Thuren mid rate coils. I do not want to lift it, but I’d like it to ride like a power wagon. The power wagon sacrifices too much payload unfortunately

My only complaint about the trailer is that it only has a 40gal fresh water tank. It has full RV hookups so it's no big deal when we stay at campgrounds but tends to suck when we dry camp. I'm eventually going to install an 80 gallon tank to replace the 40 but we haven't dry camped enough lately to make me put in the effort to change it out.

We are doing something similar(no kids living at home). We bought a travel trailer and will be listing our house soon. We are going to scout out the general area this week for a place to park it starting Nov. 1st. That may be easy or a problem, I will let you know next week.
As far as quality goes, do your research on each specific one you find. They are all similar but I looked for solid surface countertops, plywood/solid wood cabinets, aluminum structure etc. they are all built to be light as possible so don't expect beef.
If your house is paid for keep it. If lot rental is similar to Florida around the country at the time of 1k a month you would be better I’d keeping it.
