What's new

TrashE

With all the front axle dimensions in place it was time to get down. I started by preheating the chunk with my propane garden torch and welding the diff drain plug inside & out then hit the bottom bolt hole from the shave. Then added a little more heat and welded the first tube to the chunk.

Little bit more heat and then burned in the other side. Tapped around the welds a bit (peen) to send some positive vibes it's way and maybe relieve some stress. Double wrapped the cast and let it sit for about 2 hours.

Then woke it up with a little bit of some post heat and a little more tapping to relieve stress. After that I wrapped it up again in it's 2 welding blankets and didn't look at until the next day.

I didn't find any cracks but there might be some hiding in the welds I couldn't see. Either way I feel alright about it. I've repaired a dozen or more things made out of cast iron and this is only the second time I've used a mig welder to do so. Everyone else seems to have success doing it so I gave it a shot, major time saver.

Recheck with the bar again, the green tape around the knuckles is to keep junk out of the weld joint while I was prepping the cast center section.

Second pass.

Was kind of ugly.

And undercut in some spots.

For the cap I wanted to run a mig weld to match the ones already on the center section. However I felt the need to redeem myself after the first two passes.

So I just TIG welded it.

Besides, my cup was restless and needed to go for a walk.

I'm not impressed but done is done.

Bump for updates
N/A :flipoff2:

Alright the only updates in relation to the trucks completion are disappointing at best.
Basically I work 198 consecutive days/year plus another 30 or so spread out with some time in between. The 198 days straight is a tough one though because it's spent off grid in a trailer away from projects and other luxuries most people don't consider. Basically the work spree ends the first week of November (or thereabouts) which is cool but my wife is due with our second child in early December which means 'Ol TrashE will likely get neglected for a year and some change.

First rate fab work - everything is obviously very well thought out. Really diggin' the whole project 👍

Thanks man, that means a lot from a fellow builder/fabricator. I haven't commented on your Dakota build but I've read every word and always look forward to updates. Keep up the good work man!

Same to you Rattlesnake, I should really comment more. I've read your entire build.

Sometimes I get irritated or fed up by the politics>tech theme that occurs on the board but you guys are solid tech contributors and one of the main reasons I keep coming back. Thanks for your contribution!

Looks awesome. I might've missed it but what paint is on the C's, knuckles, and diff cover?

With my work season starting in a couple days I figured that I would update this thread with the little bit I got done over the winter. I had quite a few other projects this time around and was only able to dedicate a few hours to this truck so I tried to do something useful that I could complete.

Here's what was done.

Cross members welded to the floor, I still need to weld the underside next time the body is off.

Front and rear portions of the body were fully welded inside and out.

Rear part of the box has been ground smooth where the doors close.

Lastly the the doors and trim were installed.

Glad to see progress on this. I see a jeep as a roommate plus the Datsun, trailer so lots of projects. Just need to offload that day job...

If only I could be left to my own devices. I bought the little jeep on a whim to teach my nieces and nephews how to drive a manual transmission. That's one benefit of the day job I guess.

Should be back home now?
Thanks for the interest.

I bought a place this year after prices became reasonable so I have been busy moving all my junk over to the new property as well as changing things around and doing some maintenance to the house.

Anyway I did finally get this truck over to the new place last week. Here’s a pic.

Hopefully I can get you guys some updates once I have a little free time for projects like this.

I trimmed the underside of the frame rails to make room for the leaf springs

Some dirt and grime inside the frame but no rust.
