I've got an old truck I'm going to strip the drivetrain out of and will have bed/rear axle left over. I want to convert it over for use as a trash trailer.

The question I have is whether to go with a V style or Y style framing for the togue. I will have the full frame available from the front frame horns back.

A V style looks like:

A Y style looks like:

The reason I'm considering the Y tongue is to get a longer trailer. I hate backing up with short trailers:homer:

I've done the vee on pickup bed trailers I've built. Seems stronger to me, also easier. I measure the coupler's angle, do some math, and cut and bend away. Minimal outside material needed, I'll toss a rectangular plate across the front to tie the two rails together, but no extra steel other than that.

Your example of a Y is probably only 6 inches longer than the vee above it.
If you want a longer tongue, you can start your vee further from the front bed wall.

Friend welded me up a trailer, notched the frame at the bed, pinched them together and welded the hitch on it.

Just depends on turning and tongue length.

Shorter seems to turn quicker from my experience.

Make it longer.

I didn't say I couldn't back a short trailer... just that I fucking hate doing it:flipoff2:

Kick ass... when are you starting your trailer project:homer:

I'm just curious if there is some sort of benefit of one style over the other.

For a trash trailer? Jeez man, just build it :flipoff2:

If you want to be able to jack knife a full 90* do a Y, if you want easier to make stronger, and cheaper, Do a V
