Train Nerds

Looks like Big Boy will make a tour of the Midwest this summer/fall.

I was in Rye Patch and Lovelock this Tuesday, all paralleling the tracks. I was hoping to see it come by on its way from Winnemucca to Portola, but didn't.

DERAIL (Pun intended)

As far as Train Nerds... There is a guy (who seems fairly autistic) on Instagram and Tik Tok that just does train content.
For some reason his account amuses me.

I had a Popular Mechanics that showed what how they serviced it between runs IIRC from the time it pulled in till when they started making steam for the return trip was an hour. Some guy had to climb in the fire boxand check the chamber, while others removed the front of the boiler and ran a brush through the tubes.

I wish they would sell rides, it would be worth the money

I didn't know Big Boy existed until I read the local posts the other night.

I met a former ppb'r and current irater on fb who is local to me because of his photo of his rig and this train. Awesome photo

PRIVATE event in Sparks NV.
I wish they would have destroyed the building it is in since they’re not even letting people visit the ‘historic building we need to save because of the history.’

I’ll maybe see it in Truckee with my kid if I feel like it (remember).

That is not a good lens for his face. It accentuates his autism.

There is a Big Boy at the Forney in Denver. This one was the only one to derail. There is one in D.C. (Smithsonian?). Only 4 left?

Showing my autism, they are stunning engines.

Edit: From what I understand, steam locomotives have to replace the boilers every 10 years. Once it is installed the clock starts ticking.

Saw this thing in Provo a few years ago. It’s pretty impressive standing next to it.

Took my daughter to Roseville station to see it. . Was a ton of people , daughter was like , why is the downtown area so crowded and no parking? Im all, dude , it’s the Big Boy West Coast Tour. It’s a big deal!

I was going to ignore him until I saw the selfie stick that turned him into Sid
then, I decided I liked the guy
Looks like he is having fun:grinpimp:

8 left. Which out of 25 built is probably the highest percentage saved of any production engine class. Cheyenne, Denver, St Louis, Scranton PA, Omaha, Frisco TX, Green Bay WI. Plus 4014, which was original in Pomona.

Not really replacement of boiler as major inspection / overhaul, which requires doing a fair amount of disassembly, extensive testing and typically significant repair work. Think of it like an engine rebuild - it's not really true that you're replacing everything in the engine, but you are tearing it all apart, almost certainly replacing some parts, and replacing others depending on wear.

Yeah, at first I laughed at him

Then I realized he is experiencing more joy from watching trains than I experience from a lotta stuff.

Kinda envy him.

Alright, I didn't consider myself a train nerd before, but I might now. Big Boy is one impressive piece of equipment. :smokin:
