Borrowed my dads 4.5x9 utility trailer
Its over 25 years old, needs a bit of love cosmetically, a new ground (grounding through the hitch at the moment) and TIRES

This trailer has never had a spare. I think a spare would be a great idea…

Currently mounted are 195/75r14 wheels
I suspect the hub is 5x4.5 but it uses bolts and not studs… literally bolts not German/Italian wheel bolts

So this seems like a standard old school car tire size. Trailer has car tires on it and always has… since I’m sinking some coin into it as the tires are dry rotted; do I stick with passenger tires or jump into trailer tires?

How hard will it be to find a spare wheel that has the correct shoulder for bolts that isn’t tapered?

If I can’t find a match… is this the point where I jump up a wheel size or two?

Best place to get trailer tires.

If you want REAL trailer tires, the goodyear G316 are the best money can buy. They are EXPENSIVE, but well well worth it.

Keep running cheap car tires. Trailer sizes that small are silly unless you need e-rated.

I fix trailer problems with a new axle. It fixes all the problems with 4 u-bolts. :flipoff2:
I was actually curious if using trailer tires would take some of the bounce out of it as it has no shocks. It’s sort of a situation of “it ain’t broke don’t fix it” so I’m not totally against running car tires… they’ve lasted this long…

Same and trailer tires imo tend to bounce more as they have stiffer sidewalls.

Our very own tire guy said years ago in the larger sizes trailer tires are blem carcasses that they derate a range or two.

Which is why they have stiff sidewalls for the load range.

Also why the higher load ranges get expensive.

I personally like torsion axles for less bounce. But I've never seen a trailer with shocks outside of the small off-road trailers.

Tons of old coil spring boat trailers have them. They kinda need them since they don't naturally stop bouncing in ~2 cycles like leaf springs do.

I fell into a hole last night about bias versus radial. It bounces bad enough as it is but a set of bias on there would look sharp

Holy shit that's expensive for a 14. You can get a 16 E-rated tire for less.

But it's the "special price" so look how much you are saving.

Coker Tire specializes in removing large sums of money from nostalgic old guys who just have to have ancient technology garbage tires on their hotrod/dragster/restoration for "period correctness cool factor" reasons.

Found some tires at Princess Auto (the original Harbor Freight) for $88ea but no stock at the moment

Looks like I might need to jump up to a 205/75r14 as it seems a tad more common

Must be an Eastern thing. I've never seen a trailer with coils.
