Track Days (HPDE)

would a Cadillac XLR make a decent track car? I was thinking its a vette underneath.
Probably. In the last NASA time trial event there was a 2008 ish CTSV that won TT3 group by something like 3 sec. I think pretty much any car can be a good track car with the right setup. In the case of the crazy fast CTSV, I think he took the car class rules and squeezed every ounce out of it and had a really fast combo.

Last autocross for me till Feb. the car felt really good. I only lost to my buddy by .06 sec :mad3: in our “EM” class. In our “double runs”, I beat all the guys with our type of car by 1 sec. I found places to cut time and just go. :smokin:

Took out a few cones on the back straight with a wall at the end. :lmao:

Looks like a blast.

Went to Road Atlanta for a NASA event with a buddy of mine to help out and watch

And I got to ride passenger in this one for a session. Very nicely built LS powered fox with a very talented driver.

cool

I’m signed up for a NASA event at a track I’m very familiar with (msrh) at the end of January. I‘ll need new front tIres beforehand though. Not to mention, I want to test a few different springs on the front too.

Well, 50* and 80% chance of rain that entire weekend, so I canceled. An open wheel car in those conditions just doesn’t really sound all that fun.

BUT, autocross was last weekend. Lost EM class to a highly tricked out LS based Miata. :mad3: I did beat all the others like my car, by 1 sec. :smokin: Weather was spot on perfect.

What is that thing again? Looks like a big boy go cart
Pretty much. Street legal though.

It’s a DF Goblin kit car. Basically, buy a Chevy Cobalt and disassemble it, then Delete anything not needed, reconfigure the wiring harness, get their kit and build. Fairly inexpensive considering the aerial atom is 3-4x the price and I would figure the goblin is just as much fun.

They are about to release a second gen goblin, since the SS Cobalts are getting really hard to find. It’ll be VW based. Still in the works though.

Bad ass. A track mate is building a hill climb car that reminds me of yours. My car goes on the lift next week for season prep. I start 3/24 at njmp.

Welp new clutch is in after having to pull the trans 3 times due to the engine to trans studs pulling out. Guessing the po overtorqued them at some point. On to front wheel bearings today. Getting excited for this season....only 30 days away.

My buddy and I run Eagles Canyon a few times a year.
I have only been there once, but that was before the repave. CMRA (motorcycles) raced there last year for the first time in a long time. I wanted to go, but 100* august weather in full leathers didn’t sound like fun. The race is in august again this year. We will see how I feel if I go. I heard the track is awesome now.

i wish someone would buy MSR Houston and repave that track. I was there yesterday for a track day (CMRA race weekend) and it just gets worse and worse. :mad3:

General Tuesday question:

I have a coworker joining us at autocross next weekend. He’s running a bone stock 01 Porsche 911 AWD non turbo. I’m going to assume normal tires that would normally be at 32 psi on the street. What would be a decent tire pressure for autocross? I know just run what ya got, but thought I would bring it down a tad to help out a little bit, but I’m not sure how much.

I usually run first lap at the track @ 30, but as soon as I pit, drop em back down to 32 as they are much higher when hot.

Noted. Ya. I’m sure you guys gain heat/pressure quickly, like he will. With my car being only 1600#, we don’t build much tire temp, so pressure might climb 1psi between run 1 and 3 at best. Dump the pressure and it’s set for the rest of the runs. It’s funny watching the Miata guys spray water on their tires to cool them off between runs and we hope ours actually stay warm between runs.

I would probably start the front at 30 and the rear at 32. The back end balance sucks and u need a little more sidewall stiffness. I find the street tires dont heat up all that much in 45sec on the track. If he is running a 200 tread wear or under u might even drop a pound or 2 as they get hotter faster. He will have a blast.

For the 1st 20min track session i am about 26 and 28 psi with an end if session psi of 34 and 36. My hot target is 30 and 32 on my nt-01s. I them bleed them down for the 2nd session. U have to be real careful for the first 2-3 laps of that first session to not over drive the sidewalls.

I do have new temp and pressure tpms units for my rims this year. Im excited to have real time telemerey in the dash display

Awesome. :smokin:

I would venture to guess they are 400tw at best. Mostly a drive on sundays, “look at me” car for him. He’s gonna have a blast. I hope they put us opposite of each other, so I can ride with him and give him pointers. I’d love for him to ride with me first, so I can scare the piss out of him.

Less coasting, more gas, baby bike :flipoff2::usa:

Don’t knock my little ninja. I can beat on that thing like a red headed step child and it keeps asking for more. Almost no maintenance, plus tires, chain and brakes last forever. Not to mention it only uses less than 5 gallons of gas for the day. :smokin:

Was very impressed with Eagles Canyon when we put the AMG on track for its first miles three weeks ago. Plus we were the only team on track so I put quite a few laps on the rental car

Not much help on the auto x tire pressures. When stock class ran sticky tires I would run as low as 24 psi front. Target hot was usually 28-30. Rears as low as 20 (and as high as 85 😳😳🤫)

Ideally you could confirm with temps across the tread but at the least use chalk on the sidewalls and keep dropping pressure until you are using the whole tire

Issue is its a street car. If it doesnt have 3+ degrees of camber there is no way to use the whole tire. Personally i feel that anything under 26psi would be real bad for the tire sidewall.

One of these days ill do a western trip and hit those tracks.

Ya. That’s why I was asking a general question on the tire pressure. I know he has nothing setup for anything other than street, including tires, but I didnt know what a general pressure would be for an autocross track. We have done all the testing on our cars, with it only being 1600#, we have concluded the general consensus is around 12f/15r
