Track Days (HPDE)

Ill be out at njmp thunderbolt with Motorsport Enthusist on Labor day. Its usually crowded that monday so it will be a lot of traffic. They have 5 or 6 more events this year if u google them.

Running an autox for the first time tomor at the philly sports complex with scca too.

We r also looking a x-country trip to sand hollow and maybe vegas area in '24 if u want to join us?
Maybe. I don't really wheel anymore, have a mild 4Runner that I use to run dirt roads and mild trails here in AZ, but no more rockcrawling for me. I'm in Vegas near every month, so it might work out.

I had a Lotus Elise for a while, then a Fox body Musktang, now a G35.

Haven't even driven the G35 this year other than to move it in the driveway.

one of the best things about autocross is being able to take passengers. It’s pretty common for a stranger to walk up and ask for a ride. Scaring the shit out of them is the best. I also recommend riding along in a Tesla. Most interesting :smokin:

I had an HPDE student with a Tesla Model 3 performance...it was pretty strange. We cooked the brakes quickly, but with all that weight down low, it did better than I expected.

I've had three people vomit during HPDE ride alongs. We made it to the hot pit in all three cases. I now carry barf bags in the glove box and use an open face helmet as my spare for passengers who don't have their own.

I think a model 3 is what I was in. Anytime he got squirrelly, he would point the tires where he wanted to go and stab the throttle. It was a controlled manhandling.

Haven’t had anyone puke, but have had a couple that couldn’t get out fast enough. Surprisingly, the wife liked being passenger at autocross. Actually went for 2 rounds.

My girlfriend will jump in the passenger seat. Any chance she gets. She loves it and is considering picking up something that she can start learning in as well

That would be awesome. I wish the wifey was into driving, but I’m happy she liked the ride alongs. Can‘t get too greedy.

I dont do very well in the passenger seat. I got about 6 laps in at Watkins Glen in a SPC (spec cayman) and it was all i could take. He was running under 2.10 and it was violent. Im pretty sure i bent his fire extunguisher bracket trying to brace myself.

One of my friends and fellow instructors wears a motion sickness patch because he will make himself sick while he's driving. Lol. The braking in my car is pretty violent and I find that's what gets most people.

I’m a bad passenger too. Not scared, I just want to be the driver.

I know a guy that has a 2002 nascar cup car for sale , complete Minus the engine , for a very reasonable price . Under two grand .

How difficult is it to reset the chassis so they can run a road course ?
Or is that even possible ?

There r 3 or 4 guys that run nascar set ups with us. They seem to do just fine but have to line up in the pits so they can shoot to the grid. The clutches r very tight.

I'll be at Pitt Race Sept 2,3,4. It's my favorite facility.
R u there with Auto Interests. R they decent to run with?

I was suppose to be there last month but covid got me. Still trying to get there this year.

aren't they just a triple disc ceramic 7.25"?
I dailied a twin for a while, built outta used-up nascar bits
got old because I'd break the centers outta the discs every 50k miles or so, stupid VW transmission doesn't have a pilot bearing and the input shaft flexes from the amount of power I was putting through it

Dont really know what they run but the few i see at the track all have to launch the car to get it going or it stalls

oh yeah that's how they work lol
I was able to get enough flywheel mass going that it'd sorta drive like normal, but they aren't a smooth-slipping clutch (and they're generally run with almost no flywheel mass)

I run almost primarily with them anymore. Really good people who run a quality operation. It's a lot more structured than others I've run with (in a good way). Strong focus on the education part for the lower run groups and they pretty much leave the advanced guys alone to do their thing. They are starting to partner with Gridlife and I think will be running the HPDE portion of Gridlife event next year.

Well the one I’m looking at doesn’t have a clutch or an engine .
It does have everything else though.
And it’s dirt cheap .

Can you ask the guys that use the older nascar chassis about Resetting the chassis so it can also make right turns ?

Is it just swapping the front upper and lower control arms ?

I hate ceramic clutches

I‘m sure there’s more to it, but in my mind, springs and an alignment sets it to handle both directions. :jester:

Oh that’s part of the plan is to put a 50s or 60s body on it.
Take it to the track and become an obstacle for al the people with fast cars and fast wallets ….

I'll ask this weekend. I have a friend who is running one. He bought it already setup, but I'm sure he knows the details.
