What's new

to spool or not to......

I hated spools. In good traction spots tight turns suck.
Previous Rig I had Detroit front and ARB rear. Broken shafts but never hurt the Detroit.

This buggy started with grizzlies f&r. When I did my J76 I went Detroit front and ARB rear again. Love it!

I’ve broken 3 axle shafts and the Detroit is holding up. But that’s just me. :flipoff2:

I’ve had plenty of rock ledges I couldn’t climb with the rear locked, then switched off the rear ARB and crawled them at an angle with just the front locked.

False.

Spool/detroit/grizzly front with drive slugs

Selectable rear with cutting brakes

Atlas 4 speed

Profit.

Ditto. Thing is, with a selectable rear, it helps sometimes and fucks you others. You have to be willing to play and experiment to figure out how to optimize it. More than once I’m struggling and somebody will tell me over the radio to lock the rear. Oops. Other times, I find myself watching others struggle or do a 3 point turn and I skid right around with the cutting brake. Crawling at an angle unlocked with cutters is a real thing.
One buddy is spooled in the front, ARB rear with cutting brakes and about the same wheelbase as me. I watch him 3 point a lot when I don’t. I don’t know if it’s the spool or he forgets to unlock and use his cutters.

i redid the steering at the beginning of the winter and my steering is about as good as i can get.
Just checking. I’m teaching newbies and we are about to do that to the factory axles

Also, make sure your axle shaft ujoints are in phase in the front axle. It only matters if you have a spool.

wait what do you mean phased? like line up the yokes on a drive shaft phased?

so if i was staring at my front end the short shaft yoke should be at the 9 o clock position on each side for example
