Simple question.

People talk about "Getting Off The Porch"
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Is that running for city counsel. or is it taking up arms, or somewhere in between?

getting of the porch is literally any action.

yes, run for office. yes, take up arms. yes, stand on the street corner with a sign. those are all off the porch.

"getting off the porch" is just a phrase that people use to express a feeling. It's like "just wait until I tell my big brother!" or "I'm going to call / you'll be hearing from my lawyer!"

It basically means someone is upset, but NOT actually willing to go beyond just talking.

Nope

I always thought it related to how much crap you would put up with from someone standing in front of your house until you are willing to climb down off the porch to put a stop to it.

But the meaning has grown broader and more vague. I mean, like not everyone has a porch these days! :cow:

Get involved. At your kid's school, local planning commission, doing volunteer work, working on your place, your marriage SHOULD be what it is.

I think the term is more about armed insurrection and 'having had enough' and making some mass action.

For the most part, it is like exercise, or diet, or any of that stuff... it is so easy to stay in the same pattern and just be mildly to deeply dissatisfied, but not quite being uncomfortable enough to get up and do something about it... that you just accept it.

I overheard someone talking the other day that he felt like the nation (and maybe the world) is in its current state because there are so many people who are unhappy with their own lives and can't or won't do anything about it, so much easier to go online and complain about 'events'....

It is more 'fun' to fly to DC and march on the capital or go to Portland and march on 'the man' than to work on your relationship with your wife, figure out a better job, go fix the septic system. My wife will come outside where I'm working on some project that is 'get it done' and she'll say, 'when you get a chance' and I drop the shit project for the trip to the store in a heartbeat.

I don't think Joe Biggs is a revolutionary, I think he is an adventure tourist.

Well in your case get off your butt plug :flipoff2:
fun fact, ain't even got a proper plug either
though one of the knotted ones does stay in there good enough to pretend to be one, though it's a bit big

back to the thread topic and thinking on it further, what motivation would I have to go and do something suicidal like disagree with the feds?
Ain't like I've got any notion of making kids and therefore no desire to be making the world a better place for them through some shit that would no doubt result in my being dead.

It's fucking comical how wrong you are:rolleyes:Nothing about getting OFF the porch has to do with your marriage or your castle...
It also has nothing to do with taking up arms :homer:
You couldn't be further off, but hey, in your world I'm sure you're right:laughing:

Getting off the porch is more about getting involved in Local politics or even protests to try to create change on a larger scale.
Bringing arms(as a scare tactic) and violence into it is nothing more than being an extremist, and extremists are usually already off the porch.

Getting off the porch is doing something about what you want to happen. More than the minimum.
Voting is not off the porch. Attending every city counsel meeting and speaking on topics that affect you is
Putting a bumper sticker on your car or a sign in your yard is not getting off the porch. Volunteering for a running candidate, running for an office, etc is.
Bitching on the internet about gun rights isn't. Donating to the NRA isn't. Providing gun safety classes for people who wouldn't otherwise get exposed to guns is.

The problem is that most people are so lazy that they don't bother doing anything until they see it as too late. So by the time they get off the porch it takes a lot more work.

My motto for this year (mottos): Put up or shut up, Be the change you want to see in the world, The future will be kind to me as I intend to invent it. All mean the same thing. If you care - do something. If you don't care enough to do something shut up about it.
