I saw the movie 'The Martian' when it came out and really liked it. I noticed, over the years, that when it would be on, you know, channel surfing and it is 20 minutes in, I would watch it anyway. There is another movie about Mars that I watch like that too (Red Planet) but I really liked the 'just get on it' attitude of The Martian. I'm a reader. Always have been. A couple of years ago, I downloaded The Martian on my phone and read it. I really enjoyed it. I've read it a couple of times and while I don't think Weir is necessarily an 'all time great' novelist or whatever, I think he is a genius storyteller who really understands how to tell ME a story.

I had some work to do at the cabin, so I downloaded Hail Mary. Probably many of you have seen the Martian, so no need for a recap. Hail Mary is a story about a catastrophe that faces the earth and turns out to face the universe and how it gets approached and how people overcome. These microscopic beings are essentially sponges for energy but require carbon dioxide to breed. They can travel anywhere and because they are energy sponges, they can use the energy as propulsion. The effect to earth is that they discover our sun and begin a beeline for it and then head to venus to breed and then return to the sun (with the offspring) and repeat. This causes the sun to dim. The dimming effect is noticed on earth and the near term viability of people is threatened. So, the world collaborates on trying to find a solution.

It is 'sciency' but understandable for a regular person who at least mildly understands math and science... as the story continues it is discovered that these astrophage (the critters that eat energy) have been wreaking havoc across the universe and eartlhlings are not suffering alone.

If you liked the martian, I think you'll love this story. Lots of movies today are just a series of chase scenes with the plot as the point of the chases. This book is a huge series of challenges and mistakes and do overs.... If you want something fun to read that also does not insult your intelligence... this is a good book. I'm going to read his third book next month (on my list) I hear it is also really good.

I have not read a lot of sci fi in probably 20 years... it will be fun to find some other stories in this vein. I've read all the classics, but I have a feeling there are a bunch of new writers that kick ass... not as 'classical writers' or whatever but great stories and interesting situations.

Project Hail Mary was better than the Martian. Like most instances, the movie wasn't good vs the book.

Project Hail Mary is best served through the audiobook though. The narrator is awesome. I always have an audiobook going in my ear unless I am at work and PHM is one of the best I have listened to out of 100s

I'll check it out. I would love to hear Rocky's voice.

There is a novel called 'A prayer for owen meany' where the character Owen Meany has this incredible voice... they fucked it up when they made the movie... but, I have reread the book a couple of times and his 'real voice' comes back.

I enjoyed Artemis enough, but...

It read like young adult fiction, a mash up of Moon Is A Harsh Mistress and Podkayne of Mars.

It's been a few years, maybe I should reread it.

Martian and HM were great storytelling.

My next door neighbor, David Wrigley, wrote a book called "A Little Farther West" about a group of folks who find some technology that lets them explore the universe. He is working on a second one as we speak.

Check it out if you are interested, I found it to be a great read.

Just read Hail Mary not too long ago - wonder how much, if any, it inspired the movie Spaceman (Adam Sandler)

If you've never read Phillip K. Dick, there's a lot of good stuff there. A Maze of Death, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Ubik, Valis trilogy, A Scanner Darkly, etc:smokin:

Hail Mary was ok.

Dungeon crawler carl is a great read and a better listen, apparently in talks to turn it into a show.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is hilarious and would make an awesome CGI/AI movie.
Defiance of the Fall is a similar series that I got into, but haven't gotten caught up with.
He who fights monsters is another series you might enjoy. A mix of magic and science fiction.

Hail Mary is definitely better in audio imo.

Never heard of Dungeon Crawler Karl and looking it over it doesn't seem like something I would be interested in BUT I have just about exhausted the post apocalyptic genre that I really like so I will give it a shot and see. I have a hard time finding books, and especially series, to get into these days.

I'm on a free Audible trial and Hail Mary was the first book I got and loved it. I can see how some of the sounds/language may come across better listening to it rather than reading it.

Have not read or listened to the Martian, but watched the movie, and loved it.

I've got a another free credit, is Artemis worth a listen? If I don't go that route, I'll probably get something by Michael Connelly as I really enjoy the Bosch TV show.

I never tried Artemis as the reviews, and some personal friends reviews, were not good but I probably should one day.

The Bosch books are good and much more detailed that the series on TV. They cram a few books into a season and leave a lot out.

If you liked Bosch, Myron Bolitar series from Harlen Coben is excellent. In fact, most everything from Coben is excellent. Just stay away from the shitty Netflix adaptations.

Yep, I was thinking the same when I was listening to it that without the voice and noises made by Rocky, the story would lose flavor.

Anything narrated by Ray Porter or RC Bray is going to be a homerun.

I thought Project Hail Mary was better than The Martian. I was disappointed in the film for the Martian, but that's pretty much always the case. I haven't read Artemis yet. I float between Sci-Fi and Fantasy. I recently got myself current on the Pierce Brown "Red Rising" series (the audio books have excellent narration) and now I'm into some Brandon Sanderson.

I do enjoy first contact books and have a pretty long list of them that I have appreciated. I enjoy writers like Andy Weir who make the science approachable and understandable to the layman. I think people who can communicate these kinds of high concepts are really valuable to society.

I read the Martian before the movie came out, so it was pretty cool when the movie came out and actually was decent. Haven't read Hail Mary, but based on what you described, you might like Dragon's Egg.

I like the Expanse series a lot, and again was pretty pleased when the TV series came out.

I liked the Martian, I usually just check the new books shelves at the library and haven't seen Hail Mary. I reserved it as an ebook and Artemis was available so I have it now. Thanks for the tip, didn't register the Authors name in my mind when I read the Martian a couple years ago.

thanks for the suggestions, I will check them all out!

devoured all the phillip dick stuff in the 80's.. huge influence for me!

I've read almost all the Carl and Monsters book. I think I have 1 each left. I love them. I've never played D&D or any RPG really so that's saying something.

Ill check out defiance once I finish up the others.

I just picked up the book Red Rising on sale, so good to hear you liked it.

The first book is amazing. The first series is really good. The second series of pretty good, but he hasn't finished it yet so I'll hold my full judgement

Just finished Artemis. It was kinda young adultish but I still enjoyed it. I didn’t get bogged down by new imaginary creations even though there were plenty. I’m still on a long waiting list for Hail Mary in e books. I’ll have to see if an actual book is available. A lot
of times they are available when ebooks aren’t.

Dang incredibly slow readers.

I got the first book, Black Echo on Audible. It was the "special edition" which was narrated by Titus Welliver, the guy who plays Bosch and I really enjoyed it. It takes place before cell phones, so it was interesting to go back in time a little bit when people still smoked inside and used pay phones.

It seems that there are/will be seven books total, but are divided in series of three and four. Do the first three tell a complete story?

What kind of artificial scarcity is that bullshit?

I read that whole series last year. Loved it. I've seen the show 2-3x.
Legacy is worth watching, but watered down. It makes his daughter and the prosecutor equal main characters.

Elvis Cole is a very similar series you should check out.

Ha, probably favorite 2 narrators also. Listened to books that weren't really my favorite genres just because of their excellent narration.

Just finished the newest Bobiverse book that came out done by Porter.

Hell Divers and Mountain Man series done by Bray are fantastic.

Listened to Artemis and The Martian which were both good. Have Hail Mary on my wish list, guess I need to bump it up to the top.
