That dirt road in the background of your first pic I think is Hell Roaring Plataea trail, we used to go hike up there to the back lakes and camp and fish. Caught the biggest fish to date on a fly rod, 16" Lake Trout.
Also along one of the guardrails, may be where your picture was taken if you look over the edge into the rocky canyon you can see a old rusty piece of road equipment from when they were building the original road. It went over the edge and is still there.

This was on the way to Lolo Pass, we couldn't figure out what this was at first, looked like a snow bank with a bunch of left over logs. Well truns out it was the result of an avalanche. The is a pile of all the trees and log in this next section smashed into the opposite side of the canyon.
started way up there and cleaned out that entire section.
