Taurus 1911

For a toy or defense?

They were on the lower end of all offerings when I was in the market.
I was steered away by my local shop.
Landed on a colt and a Springer...
Cry once as they say.

IN before the glock fanboi!
If you fire A 1911 first you will h8 the striker fire control!
Run run Fast

Yes.

Springfield is second on the list for a few hundred more $. I really like the look of the Ronin.

Whatever I end up with will be full size 5" barrel .45 acp.

I would not go Taurus on a 1911.

Rock Island is way better in the affordable 1911 category.
If you don't mind supporting the POSs at Springfield that is another good way to go.

Might see what you can find used locally.

I have a Taurus pt100, not quite a 1911 but there’s nothing wrong with it. For 1911 on a budget look into the Remington r1, I have the enhanced and I can shoot better with it than my SA operator. I think it was less than 600 in like 2015ish.

I have the base model Springfield 1911 and love it.
A buddy that worked at a gun shop for some years said he had a lot of Remington r1 come in for repairs. YMMV.

Bid on a Rock Island on gun broker. My go to gun shop closed, the others in the area have strange hours. Some other good ones in the state, just need time to get there.

No on Taurus 1911s especially that one with the black finish. Friend had a devil of a time getting them to warrantee it when it broke. Had to get the gun store he bought it from to pester them to get moving on it. He had only had a few months and the finish was already wearing off.

Springfields can be well made. Looks at Dan Wessons if you can find one. They have a really nice crisp trigger.

I have 1911’s that run from the Taurus to 3k customs. The Taurus eats everything. It’s been a fucking rock and I’m surprised. Would buy.

My glock will eat anything also, but it's just a beater and HAS to.
the customs get to be finicky...
self defense as the op wants...
Go BIG, buy a runner.

Good to hear. I might run over to my hole in the wall back woods gun shop in the am. See what they got.

good luck tit head. if your tractor had a back hoe Id trade my 1911 and a case of 45

Have had a Taurus 1911 for years, never had any real issues with it, eats pretty much everything I've run through it, finish isn't the greatest, feels a little cheap, but nothing a set of grips and a few other bits couldn't fix.

I have one that I've fed a shit ton of ammo through....probably 5--10K rounds over the last decade. (8K?)

only malfunctions were when I was trying to find the lowest powder load I could go. 3.9grains of WST was a tad light - it fired, but wouldn't cycle :homer:

Ruger SR1911, I picked up a slightly used, stainless, commander, safe queen, from a retired gun dealer acquaintance for $500. That was without a box and only 1 mag.

I'm a Taurus bigot, not a fan. I know it's a totally different firearm, but we own a first gen Millennium Pro 9mm, and it's the pickiest damned thing. I mean, what won't shoot white box Winchester? I'll tell you what, a Millennium Pro... Hard pass on the Taurus.

I may be a hypocrite and own a Judge some day, hard to justify S&W's premium price for their Governor vs. the Judge, but that's about the only caveat to my ban on Taurus.

I won't own a Taurus Tracker if you gave it too me. My buddy had one in 44mag, and the damn thing locked up in (literally) bear country. Couldn't lower the hammer, couldn't move the trigger. nothing.

Waiting for ma compliant sig nightmare carry to become available. Never really cared for Taurus. As said, I would spend more coin now and have no regrets. What is your local shop? Pete’s in north Adams is a great place and will get you whatever you want. They live in VT.

I was going to Bennington trading post, but they shut down. Local hole in the wall is Pike's in Halifax. I'll check out Pete's.

Maybe Pikes is a new shop up there. West Halifax is were my grandparents got married.

Got sniped on this 1911 by $5.

Going to just shop around locally.

I like .45's, I have .45's... but a full 5" barrel I would literally just leave in the nightstand. For defense that I am going to carry with me, it is a 3" revolver or a small and lite .380/ 9mm. But hey, that's me and we all have preferences. :grinpimp:

That being said, theres no greater joy than a .45 1911 or 1911A1. Good ol American Steel. Springfield would get my vote! Even the typical old US GI version kicks butt.

This won't be a concealed carry gun obviously; it'll be a console of my truck and easy to access gun (no it won't be left in there). Also something to take on hikes and drives into the National Forest.

I enjoy shooting large frame pistols. I'm comfortable with them. Compact pistols I don't have a great comfort level for to be honest. They feel small in my hands and my hands are average sized.

I can't carry at work and I'm rarely out in public anymore. Truthfully the only time I go out in public is for dinner and drinks, in which case I can't carry anyway, so this makes sense to me.

My state is open and concealed without a permit, so it could be holstered on my hip legally.

Taurus 1911 actually has a pretty good rep. Taurus' customer service, OTOH... not so much. I've only had to use Ruger's CS once & they were stellar.

If the Taurus was dirt cheap I might go for it. I would figure on taking it to a local 'mith for any fixes though.
