Title says it all, talk me out of buying another massey Ferguson dozer. I have the 2244 with a 4 in 1 and ripper, I have new tracks for it but dont want to deal with those until I can fix the drive wheels. Looking for another 2244 I came across a 200b. 200b has a 6 way blade which would be fucking great, and the drive wheel I can see looks good. Guy says it runs, but would stop moving. Never bothered to reply when I asked if it would move enough to get on a trailer. The owner doesnt know if it's the torque converter or the reverser. Sounds like the reverser getting plugged up is a common problem. Either way, asking $3500. I feel like I shouldnt even go look at it, but then again...

I like old stuff and a d8 ain't in my budget. I'd rather get an excavator, but again, budget. Unless you know where I can get a big one for ~$4000
I think the time you will spend fixing this one and bringing it back to life, you can spend working and putting towards a nicer dozer. Fixing old stuff has become counterproductive, unless youre retired and need a hobby, IMO

Excavators are nice, thats what I would get as well.

That's the gamble, if it's the reverser its fluid and filters, torque converter is another story. Not looking to blow half my years pay on something I wont be using to make a living with.

My limited uses for an excavator, I'd be better off renting one

Waaaaaaaaay to much money. 2 D4’s just went at auction here for for less than 3k each. Both runners and ready to go to work. That MF’r is scrap price only.

Price too high. 1500 maybe, and I've got a feeling your going to lose the gamble on this one.

You rebuilding your sprockets yourself or trying to find good used ones?

Seen sprockets rebuilt using pipe that had the same diameter profile as the outside diameter of the bushings.

How much property do you have?

Big excavators get cheap past a certain size, I've noticed it here, and ThePanzerFuhrer mentioned it in another thread
I've seen a few for less than small minis. 40 acres

I paid 1600 for the 2244 I have and that was delivered from hour and a half away, also 5 years ago

The teeth are worn to the gums... one has a rebar repair, the other nothing. They are one piece so I'd have to have them cut and new teeth made to be welded on. From what I've found, nothing interchanges, including massey stuff. Certain parts exist if you want to order from Europe, but not drive sprockets.

I'm going to be about zero help, but I know there are forums dedicated to this type of sport out there

Neighbor is a retired dentist that restores old equipment, not steam powered old, but phone number on the ID tag is four digits old , start with a bar in the flywheel old

He manages to source parts still

Off topic -Pretty cool, he has a old CAT he hauls on his equally old lowboy tractor/trailer combo to old timey tractor pulls

We have 3 of those old 200c dozers. Decent tractor, but good luck finding parts for them. One of ours is parts, one needs clutches/brakes and the third got torn apart years ago with a fuel problem and bad turning brakes and never put back together. Been thinking about getting at least one fixed, but haven't gotten around to it. For that price and in that shape I'd run personally. Only reason I kinda want to fix mine is it's my grandpa's old tractor.

So many people think a 6 way turns it into a motor grader. It's really overrated for most all dozer use and is just more moving parts.

I'd much rather spend that money on the ome you have instead of opening a new can of worms.

Back when I was doing engineering work for mines we had to rebuild drive sprockets where nothing was available. I designed up a profile based off the tracks and printed it 1:1 scale as a template which would span 4-5 teeth. The guys in the workshop just built the teeth back up with a MIG and used a grinder to bring anything back over.

It worked and they even did it with the sprockets still mounted.

Can you just burn new sprockets from plate? I'd do that way before building back up with weld.

that's stupid, no backup behind the pipe
just weld new teeth on, just find a can of whatever rod and start running beads across until it looks okay-ish
Your the same guy that says go for it on other sketchy shit now your an expert on sprockets, pins, and bushings.

When I’ve seen this done, and it is sketchy, the voids were welded up with the pipe being your symmetrical piece that fit the bushing.
The edges of the points have to be beveled to keep from eating the rails.

The pipe piece maybe would save you a hundred lbs of welding rod

Twenty years ago very few dozers that went out the door had angle blades.
Now I would guess that 50% of the D6 family sold are hydraulic angle blades.
The D8s and D7s on a pipeline ROW are mostly angle blades. The operators have learned to use them at a big advantage moving dirt sideways instead of using a straight or semi-u blade.

I agree they are not a motor grader but with gps grade controls they can do grade work nuts on while rolling a windrow.

That's what I was thinking, I'd do some type of AR just because.

They could even be sectional to make it cheaper and easier.
I burn 3/4" on my table and can farm out the thicker stuff. I've done gears, and sprockets for roller chain before. My rc tank runs ones I cut out of plate for the rubber tracks.

your picture shows a pipe tacked in there with huge voids and shit
doesn't look like a hundred pounds of tube sections on a little machine, never mind the time cutting them up

you might be taking my opinions a little too seriously
remember, we're all just faggots talking shit on the internet

you look at IGT's pic up there and you'll see that it is one that's been repaired with sectional sprockets at one time, look at the welded together spoke
iirc they did it back then so you wouldn't have to take apart the final drives
grandpa had stories about torquing some nut on the finals on some cat tracked shit, 12000 ft/lb or something. Got a wrench to fit it, got a long pipe and got a friend, figured their weight at whatever radius to make the right torque

I've never been a fan of MF. Something was either made of unobtainium or a PITA to work on. Perkins can suck my asshole.

That dozer is also too light to do any good. A decent size tractor and FEL can do the same amount of damage.

I've been seeing komatsu dozers (d24?) for around $10k give or take. Supposedly good machines
