Going to get into the market for a shotgun to carry in my travel van. Something short of course. 18-20". Not sure if I want semi or not. Seem to have a lot of issues from my little experience around them.

Obviously, the Mossburg is really popular but just seeing what else is out these.

Want to stay at about $500 or less. Again, just for carrying around in the van on travels.

Well that deal fell through...lol

Its a shotgun. Hard to go wrong with an 870 or any of the mossberg's.

For your price range I would probly stick with pump guns.

I bought this for $200. Stuck the 18" barrel and mag extension on it. Might be into it for $450

Cheapest Break down single shot shotgun. Easy to clean, no big deal when someone swipes it, or if you need a wiffle ball bat. 20 g

I picked up one of these a few months ago. I also have an 870 super mag. The 870s always seem nicer than mossbergs to me.

Another thought might be to hit gunbroker an see what you can get a S&W 3000 for. I have a couple of them in field guns, most seem to be more defense style. But they are on par with the older wingmasters.

I had a tactical shotgun years ago (Winchester 1200), but I just wasn’t “in to” shotguns back then so I sold it.

Just before the scamdemic broke out I got the shotgun bug again. During the scamdemic I acquired a Mossberg 590, and a Maverick 88 (with 18 & 28 in barrels). :smokin:

Some accessories have been added to both

I’m still looking for a Retro 590 with a bayonet lug :smokin:

You won't get a decent reliable semiautomatic 12ga for 500.
I'd look for a mossberg 500-590, older Remington 870, winchester model 12 or 1300.
20" barrel is a good length.
New winchester spx shotguns are made in turkey.
They are all pretty even for reliability, capacity and accessories. Any of them will serve you well for years and years.
The browning bps is a great pump action, but I don't think they ever made "riot" version.
You can always pick up a full length gun and cut it down and install a bead.

Buying anything on gunbroker is just asking to overpay

Benneli Super 90. I've bought 2 for $500.00 each used. If you have time, ask around. Might get lucky.

Shotguns are very versatile. Can load a bunch of different rounds from birdshot to slugs.
They will do some serious damage to whatever gets hit.
Biggest drawbacks are range and ammo capacity. For defensive purposes you aren't going to be shooting at long ranges.
Another thing to consider is mossberg sells a 500 with both a long and short barrel so you can shoot clays or birds and have a short van defense gun.

Have you considered a firearm instead of a shotgun?

Isn't any shotgun you can touch tactile? :flipoff2:

870 fan here, we've got 3 and a Tac-14.

One is an 18.5" Tactical model. I've got more than the purchase price of the gun in accessories on. :homer:

I put a Magpul stock on it to get LOP short enough to be comfortable for 5'1.25" Jewels, with that stock's thick but pad and Fiocchi low recoil 00 she would shoot us into bankruptcy if I let her.

I’m not sure why, but Mossbergs have always felt and looked cheap to me. I’ve got five 870’s in various configurations. I’ve also got a Benelli SBEII.

One of my favorites is my youth model 20ga. It’s bad ass and a great way to get tactical size without paying for it. It’s handy as F and has killed pheasants, turkeys and clays as dead as my 12ga guns.

I’m not saying 20ga is better than 12ga. But honestly, look at the youth models.

My 500 was $180 at Big 5 Sporting goods, some 25+ years ago. Shit, the light I put on it cost about the same.

It's 2023, why are you people still buying pump shotguns?

:flipoff2:
Because they are dead nuts reliable and 1/3 the cost of a reliable semi-auto.

The Mossbergs have proven to be as reliable as anything else. I can’t argue that. My personal preference just isn’t Mossberg.

It's a fallback weapon in my house. If my wife is alone she knows to sit low in the walk-in closet during a home invasion and wait for the door to open. I've done a couple shotgun courses with it, walk and stalk, house clearing, that kind of thing, but my VEPR12 is better for that in every regard. I don't shoot clays, or birds, so them fancy guns are off my list.

I used to prefer the 870 to the mossberg, but with the state of Remington through all the freedom group stuff, the 870 isn't the same as it was.
If you can find an old blued wingmaster they are smooth as can be. I won't be giving mine up.
