Super Duty axle dust shields

I have a 2005 front D60 and a 2014 rear 10.5 waiting to go in and I'm starting to get them prepped... the dust shields are all crumpled from the junkyard. Can I just remove these and run without them? Do they provide any important spacing at all (if so, can I just trim them back)?

I haven't run the pos dust shields in 4-5 years. No issues. I find they just get in the way, and hold mud and shit. Shit can them and don't look back IMO.
