What's new

Successful stories of overcoming collecting-warning-long!

I really think the answer to this is something more about my acceptance that it isn't 1997 any more. Guys aren't swapping 351W's into their moms old Mustang like they were. With china manufacturing etc. most people are just buying new.

Just because it is decent condition, and should be useful doesn't mean I should keep it. I detest throwing away stuff that is good. ...however I am beginning to detest storing stuff I will never use even more....

Just an acceptance thing. Doing some home repairs and when that is done, I am getting on this.

Post a vague topic on IBB and hope for the best

I did get yet another LS in trade for some work last week. I'm at number 6 in the shop now, all in pieces, so I'm not out of hoarding junk yet, but engines are smaller than axles. Much count for something, right?
Engines are good because of size. With some feet on them they are easy to move and have value. Lots worse things to hold onto than LS engine stuff.

I’m talking more about miscellaneous car parts, old jeep CJ frames that kind of stuff. I have several vehicles that are pretty cool including a decent early bronco that I drive etc.. I’m not complaining about that stuff at all😎

And I agree some thing like a collectible vehicle, or a gun, could be a good hedge against the economy etc . I’ll take out of early broncos I can get lol.

I've been reading this sitting on the porch with my foot propped up to try and get the swelling down.

I was laughing at some of the posts until I actually looked at my yard. Got a 78 Blazer, 64 Willy's steel wagon, 59 Ford truck, 08 JKU Rubicon that all need "just a little work and a few more parts" to run. I've got my 10 Ford 3/4 ton van with a mysterious electrical problem sitting there. I pulled the wood off my flatbed trailer and all the wire out so I could redo it. It took a year for all the wire, lights and other stuff to get here. It's still apart waiting for me to get off my ass and do something.

On the running side I've got my 09 Focus (34 MPG :smokin:) and my 94 K2500 Suburban to get around in. My little yellow trailer I use for hauling water is good as is my camper.

Wow, this is fucking sad seeing this in writing.

spending 21 years in the military got me use to down sizing often because when the navy moved you, they move you, not all the shit you collected. not saying i dont have some stuff collected now but it is not painful for me to move shit on, sometimes..... like i still have the rolled youkon doner vehicle out back because i sayI WANT THE HYDRO BOOST FROM IT,

its a freaking challenge to move stuff on when you think i will use it someday. like scrap wood. i cant toss that or burn that because hell this little six inch piece will be perfect for anything.... lol

I have enough little tiny cutoff pieces of steel (sub 8") to fill the bed of a truck. I might need that weird triangle piece of 2x4 .250 wall one day.

Still fighting this, goal is still to have less shit just nicer shit
I keep telling myself that. Last weekend i caught myself muttering again "dammit why does every single thing I own need to be a POS project!"

It hurt me more than it should have when I threw away my drop pile just before moving across the country. I tried giving it away to numerous people that all turned it down. This stuff is gold, man, really you dont want it!!!?!

Interestingly enough, mid 2019 I'd done really well, garage was clean, liquidated projects, convinced myself that I'm good at finding hard to find things, and if I need something random, Amazon will drop it off in the morning. Then covid, then shortages, then price run ups, then Amazon sucked, then vintage cars went apeshit, then inflation, and 4 years later I'm right back where I started:laughing:

i too can relate....

I gave away the drop pile in '18 when we moved. It's shocking how much it grew in the last 5 years and it seems like I haven't fucking built anything.

Well a year later and what happened? I sold off three project cars and did OK. I did purchase one bike extra but overall way less stuff. Had some stuff happen and I realize that I am not likely living forever nor in my location. Being childless it isn't fair to leave my wife with a huge pile of Dana 20's etc. so to speak. She has less than zero desire to sell any of it should something happen to me. Even an Early Bronco, she is not interested in dealing with it. I'm pretty healthy, but crud happens.

Focused it down to two project hot rods and one project Bronco for later. Increased assets got rid of liabilities.

If the parts aren't going to complete the project cars I am getting rid of them.

Now the struggle is wrapping my head around the Ford 351W car oil pan in good shape that takes a lot of room (small shop). I can't use it, not into that. It is good but I think the space is worth more than the pan.

Battling with getting rid of the "good stuff" is going to be hard more because I hate waste.

However, that very thought process is what got me here.

My fav cool rigs are the ones someone else owns. Try to maintain that.

I have 3 project rigs but now a couple of bikes. But it keeps trying to expand and now I've got extra parts rigs for the project stuff. But the normal DD things keep turning into projects as well.

Yes I am beginning to understand that. I can really appreciate a high dollar pro touring car. No desire to wash, maintain and worry about that though.

Besides my wife's newer cars, my newest DD that I drive is a 2000, then 91 and then down to an 89. Just keeping things running well and oil changed is a pretty big deal with all the other things that we have going on.

Far from out the woods. Still looking for parts actually for my existing projects so it never ends.

I am however doing two things I should have been doing differently years ago:

1. I don't just buy something because it is a "good deal". Because that means I am going to have to sell it later. Not the fan I once was about selling stuff due to the PITA factor.

2. If I haven't used it in years, and have no plans it goes. That is my struggle ATM. Going to start pitching stuff soon.

ebay, start at .01 and let it run for a week  stuff that is shippable should be easier to unload.

*said as somebody with many boxes of parts i've kept specificially intending to just sell/give away "one of these days"

I cleaned my garage out doing this
I had parts for motorcycles that I hadn't owned in 10 years still taking up space

I ended up making enough off of my stuff to buy another motorcycle:laughing:

I have like 5 vintage "foot style/shaped" gas pedals off of cars I have parted. Some are pretty old. Strong rat rod material. I am thinking EBAY is my answer for some of this stuff for sure. I did eBay and did pretty well years ago but it has to be rare and hard to find etc.

I gave away the drop pile

Drop or scrap piles I try to keep stuff for about 1 years. If I haven't used it by then the bulk goes to the recyclers. I have a few boxes that I top off of good scrap for longer term but everything else goes in the 1 year pile.

I’m guilty of this but in recovery as they say

It is hard when stuff is cool and cheap, you always underestimate the amount of time and money to get it “done enough” to enjoy. I’ve partly been able to face reality enough that I don’t have much/any free time these days, or a place to store junk. I’ve been ok at focusing on priorities and making peace with seeing the rest go.

That being said, I still have my DD, a work truck, a rough condition wheeling rig, golf cart (drivable, mostly done), a motorcycle, a dirt bike (both projects), two trailers, a canoe (project), a flats boat, and have just started on a duck boat. My current addiction is mountain bikes, they are smaller, cheaper, and easier to assemble than other vehicles.

That being said, in the last few days, I’ve toyed with buying an Audi TT, a Kubota tractor, a larger boat, a side by side, and this morning a Sprinter van…

Doing better at this. Selling off another project car-(but I did buy a better project lol) and have been pitching more stuff lately. Threw out a large stack of books, a couple of vertical feet of magazines. When the smoke clears, I should be pretty good. Likely going to take another year or two though.

Scheduled to ad onto my shop later this summer which will give me proper storage.

The hardest part is battling your own mind and the stories you tell yourself, AKA lies you tell yourself.

I am far from a slob or hoarder, but I am amazed at the time I have spent just shifting crap around and throwing stuff out. It seems constant just sorting boxes and chucking stuff. You get busy, you get tired and stop sorting stuff and it just starts piling up.

Not the best time to sell stuff, so I am actually scrapping/throwing stuff out. That and being way more choosy about what I bring home with me.

The best question I keep asking myself is this, "Do I really want to have to sell/give away what I just am buying later?" If the answer is no, then I don't pick it up.

Finally admitted I need to downsize too.

Now if I could just get someone to give me 1/2 of what I paid for some of this crap:homer:

A buddy of mine had been using my utv trailer for storing his all steel truck shell. I needed the trailer and he hadn’t gotten rid of the shell so now it’s at my house with a for sale sign on it because I just couldn’t force myself to take it straight to the scrap yard. It really is just too nice to pitch even though it has a couple of rust spots. Have I mentioned I’m a dumbass?

Post up a list and pics, prices.

I’m not shipping project cars or all steel camper shells.
If you’re planning a trip to Yellowstone, I’ll post up.
