Successful stories of overcoming collecting-warning-long!

Maybe this is a crappy justification. And to some degree I kind of feel like you do although I know my toys are not nearly as nice I never liked nice toys. But here’s one quote. You’re a hoarder if you don’t want people to know what you have you’re a collector if you don’t mind sharing your toys with others. For whatever that’s worth something I read once kind of stuck with me.

I am kinda in the same position, but on a dumb level.
I have acquired so many vehicles and toys, I never enjoy them.

I have vehicles that are people’s dream cars and they can’t believe I don’t drive them. They just get moved in and out of the shop or garage.

For me, I came from nothing and never had anything nice.
Now I end up buying everything I see that interests me.

The problem is, at all times, something needs a part, the tranny started leaking, check engine light came on, etc, etc. So in my head, I have no free time because I need to fix these issues first.

Hell, I restored my 69 Camaro 3 years ago. It’s been driven maybe 100 miles since because the trans has a minor leak. I will never enjoy it because there’s 14 other vehicles that need attention.

I have become a hoarder and I’ve started to realize it.
I like that. It’s hard to admit that You may have a problem😎

Ironic enough, my shit isn’t really enjoyed by anyone because none of it really leaves. :homer:

I tried taking a couple of my cars to shows a couple times, but when people wanna chat about them, I’m not really interested. Not because I don’t care for the person, but because the car is a burden imo.

It’s a weird hell people create. I have a buddy in the exact same position. You kinda hate the shit, but feel like you’d die without it:homer:

After watching too much Pickers and that type show it has shown me that most "collectors" are sick to the point they cannot stop.
That being said, I have come to the realization as of late that neither of my children will want any of my stuff. Knowing that I have been gradually moving it along whether it be selling, swapping of gifting it. It's a hell of a burden to leave for your loved ones, especially when they have no interest or desire or knowledge of what you even have.
Like many have said, keep a few and sell the rest to fund the ones you really want to fix up and enjoy them.
We've all heard and seen the rust bucket hot rod whatever that "I'm going to fix up someday" Someday never comes and by the time most people realize that the car/truck or whatever is so far gone they can't even get scrap prices for it. Shameful really.

I live by the saying, “go with what you know”. And there’s probably two truck and trailer loads of Toyota parts that I really need to go through with the clean out.

I’m starting in my shop since I can’t do much outside.

I’d like a round headlight grille and buckets of you come across one and a buddy needs a 1st Gen tailgate if you post here for sale.

Dood, yer a nub.

Will do. I love first gens but don't have much left. I used to but not now.

Almost feels like an AA meeting...

Hi, my name is Bob, and I 'm a hoarder....

I have been going through this same thing the last couple months. Have way too much crap, and I need to unload some of it. Wife and I are 15-20 years from retirement, so I'm not quite ready to fire sale everything, but also realizing that I am collecting a lot of stuff. My issue is that I collect parts and vehicles to keep my current rigs going. Picked up a rolled 4runner because it has a good running 3.4 for my DD taco. Same with a wrecked FJ because it has a complete drivetrain for my wife's tacoma. A couple spare 1st and 2nd gen trucks for axles and body parts. Have had the rolled runner for almost 10 years. Need to just make time to pull the engine and scrap the rest. Same with the FJ. And the rest. BUT, as stated above, it never fails, as soon as you get rid of it, you will need it. I had a spare set of brake calipers/rotors/hub/spindle's for SA toyota that I had been tripping over for years in the garage. Finally scrapped the whole assy because "I havent needed it in years, probably never will". 2 months later, my Tacoma smoked a wheel bearing, welded it to the spindle. jacked a bunch of stuff up. No problem, I have a spare...Ended up having to special order from a Toy wrecking yard.

My wifes dad is a hoarder. Like garage big enough to fit 6 cars in, and it is packed so full of shit that you cant even walk through it... and there isn't a vehicle in it. I am looking at the fact that I am going to be the one that is going to have to clean it out when he dies. My parents are getting along in years, and my dad is an avid collector of crap as well. All I got to say is my son is screwed. He is going to have SO much shit to go through, he won't have room to collect his own crap. At least I can see that I am not alone.

I am planning to start throwing stuff out when the snow melts...

I am a pragmatist so I am not letting anything really "go to hell". Most of the projects are missing engines and have suspect interiors etc.

The bigger issue is that I have no kids and will need to move eventually-not next year or anything. No one to gift it to and I am nowhere near that age yet. No fire sale, but not that many people interested in some of this stuff now.

I don't want to get blindsided like a lot of collector types do. I have the potential of a lot of changes in ten years and I need to prep now. For one, cleaning up another family members mess. That will take a year in and of itself as it is out of town etc.

The main thing is to be way more careful about what you bring home. I don't hook onto any good deals unless they are really good deals. I don't even look anymore or try not too.

A little work every week, some CL and FB and other things and actually throwing things out it will leave.

Your vehicles to junk related to vehicles ratio is way, way too low.

Wanna add a forklift to the collection? I know where one's for sale cheap. :flipoff2:

Yeah....that is him!
I've been watching this threat waiting for someone to say something worth tearing into them over. /https://data.irate4x4.com/assets/smilies/thefinger.gif

I got 3 vehicles, 2 trailers and a bunch of parts and tools laying around.

I already feel like that's way too many and I'm a hoarder.

Don't know how you can have more than that.

I don't feel too bad now. I only have 4 project cars. Every time I threaten to get another project car, my wife threatens to get another cat. It's an efficient system.
I had to send her on a trip (modest one) every time I bought a project car -usually a cheaper one. We stopped doing that and that is when the collecting got bad.

I could use a forklift...

My wife has been using this same logic. Luckily I live in the middle of nowhere. She currently has 10 cats...

Don't know how you can have more than that.

Currently, with 3 drivers in the house, we license and insure 12 vehicles and trailers. In my mind, they all have a purpose, and most of them can't really cross over to replace another one. Most of them are wheelers of different levels, a tow rig, different size campers for different uses, DD's for myself, wife, son. At least this is how I justify it in my mind...

Every time I have passed a desirable car behind some bastard's house I've said, "Hey, now there's something I'd like to have."

But when I add all that up in my mind, I think, "If I were made of money, by now I would have sixteen 69-70 Mach 1's, three M422 Mighty Mites, two AAR Cudas or Challenger T/As, an International one ton four door, a couple of Scouts, a couple of Broncos, and more of every jeep model you can name than one person who does not own a museum could ever need.

And then, think about this. Every time you pass those cars, you think, "Why is that numbskull letting that FSJ Cherokee rot into the ground? Why is a complete 70 Mach 1 sitting outside in the snow?" Then we lament this fact to other car guys.

"Can you believe that asshole has a Principality of Monaco edition Thunderbird and he doesn't restore it?"

"Why would a guy with a 429 Torino leave it out in the weather while his Civic sits in the garage?"

"How can someone let a M170 languish behind that shed? Doesn't he know that I'd love to have an old ambulance jeep?"

And then...it has occurred to me lately, that we have become those people. Other car guys are driving by my garage and seeing my Jeep in the back and saying, "Why doesn't that old dickhead get that thing out and use it to cruise around the Superstitions?"

They'd probably even trade me their Civic for it.

I chose to leave mine in California because it wasn't worth hauling around the country. And I have the means. That thing should be allowed to sink where it sits:laughing:

If I had room I’d have a pile of vehicles. It’s the main reason why when we were looking at houses that my wife was against any place with a really large shed/shop.

Over the years I’ve gotten rid of several projects due to no storage for them. ‘77 wagoneer, Ford highboy, ‘87 square body 1-ton, couple Cherokee’s, YJ, etc. Right now I’m really wanting a first gen Cummins and a newer charger or wrx but have no place to put them.

My snowmobiles, sxs, skid loader, golf cart, etc take up all my current storage space plus a storage unit.

I could justify more vehicles no problems. I just don't. So I buy parts. Not much better...

Don't have time to work on my shit because I work on other people's shit.
I need to either stop working on other people's cars, or just pay someone to work on my stuff.
I originally started working on other people's vehicles to fund my offroad addiction.

Funny how it works.

None of this is a problem if you don't pussy out and buy the metaphorical civic.

All my cars a project cars so every day I drive a project car. :flipoff2:

This should be quoted for prosperity.

I would sell some of my junk, but everyone wants you to give it away. I will let it sit before I do that. Nobody gives me anything.

Edit, One thing I will add. Holding cash is not really a good investment, so some of that junk might be better.

Forks are a universal item. You can slap any old $200 set on there.

The 2-axle DGAF. The 1-axle is pushing it.

Get cancer.

Lack of space and finances keep me at bay. Which is a good thing.
I live by myself, no kids.

At 44 most people I am know here locally are raising families, or are not into cars-working on things. Time away from work is spent traveling or drinking or who knows what else.

Everything I have at present time has its own purpose, F250 is winter driver/do it all purpose vehicle, NB Miata is fun canyon carver as is my Ninja 650. Earlier this summer I added a Kawi Kodiak 450 for some fun in the dirt.

Travel trailer that sits covered up/on jack stands, is parked on the fenced in side of the house and didn't really move anywhere this year, we shall see what is in store for '23.

All run, tagged and most are insured (ATV and trailer are not).

Lots of tools, bicycles, other crap accumulated over the years. When I kick it someone will have to deal with it all.

If I go through with it another motorcycle will be added, as well as another vehicle. With costs of it all going up, full electric vehicles practically showed onto the public I want to enjoy ICE toys for as long as it is viable.

No long term projects/non running shells etc are in my plans, seen too many friends get started and stop at some point when life got in the way/funds or drive ran out...
