Alright, I have too much stuff. I work alot, and am over 50. When I was young I thought it was so cool to be the guy that had the ,"two GTX's, and LS-6 Chevelle, but they all need work and are missing half the parts..but they are bad ass." To some degree I have become that person, although my stuff is 55 Chevies and Broncos. I know lots of you are way ahead of me in the collecting thing, but I insure six cars a month for two people. We really only drive three. Most of the time on weekends -every weekend- we drive one.

Realistically, I am not going to get to all my projects-less than ten but still...... Most likely they are not going to go up much in value (that was a year ago when they maxed out). I have a lack of quality storage, so you are doing the tarp show, it is snowing like mad.....you get the picture. Almost all of my friends are 20 years older and I see what it has done to them. Not sure I want to go there myself. Not sure I want to be 75, unmotivated staring at rusted but cool cars that will never run under my watch.

I don't want to get rid of stuff because I can't replace it for anything near what I paid. But I also am feeling a little like screw it, there is more to life than worrying about trees falling on your engineless project cars....

Not sure life is better with stuff. For many years I had two vehicles and a reliable but scrappy dirt bike I rode all the time. My DD for almost 20 years had 38's and I snow wheeled several times a month etc. good times.

I know it sounds like Dr. Phil time, but I am seeing now that I will not live forever even though I am healthy, but I have other things to do such as an aging parent etc. to think about on the horizon. Kinda like I need to prepare for that.

My gut says sell time for at least 2-3, and clean up all the extras other than what will fit the remaining cars. I have no issues with storage and have room for lots more.

Positive thoughts about your own crud shuffling and what you came up with?

Enlightening words would help me and maybe some other collectors.

Thanks for your useful thoughts.

Will do. It’ll be funny though because it’s a foot of snow on top of various vehicles can hardly see anything

Trucks, cars, hotrods, boats all seem cool and fun at the time but can tend to be an albatross if they take too much money, time, energy.....

As we age we realize we wont be around forever and those things we loved at one time will either become projects for someone else or sold etc they lose their luster and especially if they need any work and arent turn key.

I live by the saying, “go with what you know”. And there’s probably two truck and trailer loads of Toyota parts that I really need to go through with the clean out.

I’m starting in my shop since I can’t do much outside.

The Cummins is the DD. Safe, large and will haul anything I own. The hwy is sketchy here, yesterday I saw 8 cars in the ditch in a 1/2 mile span yesterday alone. I probably use this 3-4 days a week in fall and winter. Need this guy.

The Bronco is DD ready. I am going to start driving it more, way more. Got it to drive nice (an accomplishment with one of these) but it usually sits because of cold and carb stuff. Just easier to drive EFI. Nothing wrong with it, I like the patina and it is fun to drive.

its easy for us to say get rid of it. but thats not easy... i get it. but your on the right track. you just named off two that you use. they are keepers. just do the same with the rest of the trucks or what ever and it sounds like you will sort out what you want to get rid of. sometimes less is more...

calling Add to the intercom........
Isn't he the Toyota hater? I had my fun with them, and for snow 4x4 etc. they are great. But I have kind of outgrown them or am trying to. Fun rigs, but I need to clean that stuff out.

Move or pretend you're about to move thousands of mile away.

Youll figure out what is important with a quckness.

Or worse, What could you get out in the event of a fire?

Those two thing will sort out your priorities.

Good advice. Been thinking about that. We had a serious fire that was stopped about 5 miles south. I live where fire is a serious possibility. The answer is easy, the good diesel with the red Bronco on a trailer. The rest is not as important, or not here right now.

just the oppisite, he loves them.

sounds like you have your answer with the dodge and bronco fire scenario. sell off the rest. do something nice/fun with the war department.

and maybe to relate a little more, Im a car guy. and a motorcycle guy. and a rock crawler guy. and a shooting enthusiast. etc etc etc. it would be really easy to get myself piled up in lots of that junk. I often see cars/trucks in my line of work that I think i need to drag home and "rescue". but I dont. I dont have the room or the time to do them any justice. I have a total of 4 motorcycles. 1 i absolutley wont ever sell, it was my kids first bike, a xr50 we bought new in '01. the other 3, meh they can go at anytime. my old camaro is not ever going anywhere, its a legacy car for my kids. the buggy, meh it could go too, but id replace it likely as i like rocks and rock cruising. my old cummins ram wont go away either, much for the same reasons you'll keep yours. i did add another project recently, but I have every intention of making it as nice as my camaro and leaving it behind for my boys when I die. there will be two classics for them to fight over.

We moved in '18. Wasn't ready yet, was planning on moving 20-21. The right deal came along and we jumped on it.

By pure luck, my shop was spotless, squared away, and zero clutter. I had just went through a purge/ cleaning phase. Problem was, I moved from a 30x110 to a 30x40.

Went from almost empty looking perfection, to 8lbs of shit crammed into a 5lb bag. [sigh]

This is why I appreciate my Wife. If not for her I would be living in a van down by the river with 7 jeeps parked in the yard, not one of them running.
I am far from a cranky male, but about ten years ago she quit going back there and I stopped talking about cars. She really had no idea. It is far better than it was.

But no, she is not a fan at all and really does not like old cars at all.

I'd love to see any Toyota stuff you wanna part with when you get to it
It will be spring. Nothing exciting. Just a lot of 2nd gen stuff etc. Piles of driveshafts and misc. stuff. A few core engines. I had been keeping it because they always follow me home.

Although, with the incredible number of those things heading out of Oregon going down south they aren't around that much. I sold one to a guy a month ago. Repaint, minimal clean up and straight south of the border.

Anyways....not to derail my own thread...

I know you are in the car business. For me as a civilian car guy, I always used to think "I could do that car so much better at my house". However, the last couple I am not sure.

fuck getting rid of it all. i told my wife if i kick the bucket to bring in the auctioneers. even if i thinned the herd dramatically i would have more shit than 99% of the folks out there. i know i have issues and i can deal with it by adding lots of alcohol.
I have read your stuff. You even collect property LOL! I don't drink so I have the joy of facing this stuff regularly with a somewhat clear mind. I know why people drink. I just don't.

you only have enough time and money for so much stuff. Sell all but 2-3 of the projects and make them nice and enjoy them. Be realistic you dont have the time for all of them
Well said. I always loved the story of the guy who has had the same car for 30 years and all he did to it. Then there is the guy leaning on the fence at the drag strip or trail or whatever talking about what he has at home. However, notice he isn't using them......

Fortunately I am not overly sentimental regarding this stuff so it isn't a huge deal. It is more practical for me. Once I don't own it it is gone and then it will be harder to find another one.

Gotta keep it all.

Sure as shit, get rid of something you've had for 25 years and 2 weeks later you could use it

😁

I refuse to get within 250 yards of the animal shelter.
I'd end up with 48 dogs and maybe even a dozen or 2 cats.

Ritchie Bros auction is almost as bad.

I am kinda in the same position, but on a dumb level.
I have acquired so many vehicles and toys, I never enjoy them.

I have vehicles that are people’s dream cars and they can’t believe I don’t drive them. They just get moved in and out of the shop or garage.

For me, I came from nothing and never had anything nice.
Now I end up buying everything I see that interests me.

The problem is, at all times, something needs a part, the tranny started leaking, check engine light came on, etc, etc. So in my head, I have no free time because I need to fix these issues first.

Hell, I restored my 69 Camaro 3 years ago. It’s been driven maybe 100 miles since because the trans has a minor leak. I will never enjoy it because there’s 14 other vehicles that need attention.

I have become a hoarder and I’ve started to realize it.
