I've beat the snot out of a couple axles that I just welded spindles with bolt flanges onto the end of a mobile home axle tube and a rear light truck axle that I gutted., that's pretty fancy there. I am Mr. Multi pass welder when I make an axle.
Got the 2nd one roughed today though not by choice.
My friend who I was working with this afternoon offered to turn them to final OD on his nice lathe with actual scales and shit if I roughed it. Of course this was 1hr before I had to be at his place and I was also on call for work.
I had red chips and sparks coming off the carbide. It was like a tooling commercial. Knocked that fucker out in no time flat. Lit my chip brush on fire. Lit the wall on fire. Had to use my welding gloves to get the spindle to the car. Where it then proceeded to liquefy the floor mat.
But I got it done and someone else is going to have the pleasure of doing final OD and that's what matters.
Spindles were finish turned to 4.08whatever. They were 2 and 9 thou over the ID of the tube after the rust was cleaned out and the seam was knocked down so I did a heated press fit and they dropped right in. I probably could have got away with less heat but I forgot it was thou per inch of diameter
