What's new

Stop project shopping?

I've slowed down in bringing home projects. Got a couple more in the pipeline to get this summer but I've come to the realization that I'm never going to finish them all and the older I get the less motivation I have to spend all my free time working on them. Actually got rid of a couple of small ones this spring. Of course then that created cash burning a hole in my pocket.:homer:

I’m project mentally ill. Tell myself I don’t have time or money to deal with the stuff I already have. So I buy more stuff and have to find places to put it.

I don’t even have my own hoarder paradise. I have 3 pickups at my brothers house. My race car and my enclosed trailer is at my dads house along with most of my treasure pile. My tracker is at my friend Danny’s house. I’ve got a truck and a pile of parts at my cousins house. My camper is sitting at my Grandparents house. That’s all here in New Mexico.

My trash trailer is sitting at my friend Jamie’s house in Grand Junction. My last samurai a bronco and two brick nose trucks are at my friend Reds in Mack Co. I don’t know why I do this.

Edit. Oh and I have 5 vehicles where I live plus my SXS and my car trailer.

You need an intervention

I've had the Jeep drivetrain on the floor for a few years, brought home 2 sleds, 4 wheeler, dirt bikes, etc. Now I need a shed for all that stuff so I have room to work in the shop.

I've gotten bored on one hobby and I bounce. Just so happens I am bouncing back to the Jeep as the kids are almost old enough to learn how to drive stick.

Should be learn how drive! Stick has nothing to do with it. Bonus points for getting them to learn how to drive a three on the tree.

I have garages full of projects that have stalled out for various reasons.

Two weeks ago I get a call from a friend of mine followed up with a texted pic of the chop top truck I built back in the late 90's and had to sell as soon as it was done. He gave the guy my number, and we ended up talking for an hour. I just got back from meeting up and checking the truck out after not seeing it for 25+ years. It's had a rough life, but the base is solid with a lot of the original performance parts still on it. I need to juggle some finances, but it might be coming home next week.
Finding some of my old cars would be bad for my finances now that I'm not a broke ass. I would pay a lot of money to have my first Toyota back, now that I can afford to do EFI and bigger tires and all the other shit I wanted but couldn't do in high school.

You guys make me feel better about projects :lmao:. I got up to 7 vehicles at one point, with 3 driveable. Now I'm down to 4, with 3 driving and the only reason the 4th doesn't at the moment is it's getting an EFI upgrade. I haven't brought home a new project in a few years, but I've caught myself surfing marketplace lately

I never sell. I strip then scrap the shell. I just can't bring myself to sell. I never look to get rid of anything actually.
I can think of 4 vehicles I've actually sold. 3 I traded away for other undoubtedly equally clapped out shitboxes, all the rest including my first and second vehicles went to China to come back as harbor freight screwdrivers.

Only 7?

I'm literally sitting here taking a break, with black hands, from working on my International project truck and surfing marketplace :shaking::laughing:

I tell myself the IH is a long term project so I search for quick projects for filler :lmao:

That is how I ended up building my V8 Frontier. Bought it blown up cheap, got to reading on the VK 5.6 swap being nearly bolt in except for the wiring. Found a cheap, low mileage, wrecked Titan for a donor and made it happen. Only spent a few weeks getting that project going. Phase 2 is suspension work swapping in all the Titan bits but the truck works fine now so shelved everything.

Want to find an 05 ish F250/350 gasser truck to use for farm shit and maybe throw a 70's Ford body on it next

I actually have the room to store all my projects and trailers and shit now but sold a lot of it to buy said property

Phases. I'll have a dozen vehicles sitting around, then when scrap is low and you can't give stuff away, say....2012, I'll scrap it all for next to nothing. Then the late teens happen and suddenly all that square body and big block stuff is suddenly worth a mint. I start acquiring "good" deals again that only need a little (fuckton) of work and repeat. Hoping this downturn I'm smart and buy like a MF'er instead of liquidating. When I walk out and see more than I'll ever get done, I become more aware of my mortality and purge. So automotive bulimia

I've never sought ought to buy something. Everything I own is because it was a good deal. I'll purposely go to an estate auction and buy something by accident. That's almost the allure, what will I come home with?

I know people joke about hiding things from their wife, lying how much they paid, etc. If I was so inclined, I could liquidate and double my money... but there's no fun in that.

Marketplace is dangerous:

did you drive through this town 3 hours away a week ago? Let me show you everything for sale there

Scrolls through pages of garbage...

heres a a vehicle you didnt know you needed

Sonofabitch... I do need that.

I don't actively seek them anymore but if something cool comes my way for the right money I still usually buy. The curse of being good at fixing things is that I always see the potential in something and sometimes overlook reality.

My new daily driver is sitting in my shop right now with the engine out because buying and fixing a 296,000 mile car that'll probably cost me about a grand to get on the road worked better in my head than just spending 2500 bucks on a running/driving one.
I call it the curse of being handy. "You know, I can pull the reared out the other (insert car here) and put it in and have a driver in a week". That is fine if you have nothing but one car sitting around. When it is a few not so good.

It is a real curse being able and handy it almost feels like it.

Keep looking but rarely purchase anything.

Started Seeing projects differently now. Before I purchase anything, I research parts availability and cost. Then take 10 minutes and write down a parts list leaning towards big ticket items.

Example, used mini excavator. Final drives, pumps, engine. Figure out a rough estimate. This has helped me to shed the wants. Hell, I can rent way cheaper.

People sell shit because it's junk or an expensive fix that you're going to deal with it or let rot in the backyard.

Having said all this, I'm looking for a willys jeep (flatty or early cj5) if any of you have something that's in the way.

I browse FB MP and CL mostly for tools, although my purchases have slowed down. Last thing I bought was a medical roll around drawer box (like a tool box) it’s heavy built and roller bearing drawers. Can’t pass it up for $50.

I have a ton of projects to do right now like building my 40’ high cube box foundation, finishing the remodeling in my house, work at work and work on our farm. Not much time for a project vehicle right now. I have things I need to do to my 99 tracker too

I want to build a rat rod tho. I don’t mind starting from scratch but may look at buying one done to redo or someone’s project. I’m going to rustober fest this October which is a really cool event.

Yeah, not a ton of years left to fawk with that but we’ll see how things go.

It is the thrill of the hunt for me. What I really like is to buy unfinished project cars from people who have spent alot of money and then did not complete them. I keep the spare parts for my stuff I really like. I have done that a few times and done well.

Not really into buying an old Willys truck that needs every thing from new floors to a frame replacement. I used to be, and I'd buy it if it were a steal. But just dragging home every square body 2wd because it has a really good bed I can use.....no thanks.

I did that for years and it took years to get rid of it responsibly.

I say no most of the time. But I still look and try and buy stuff I am really into.

Still wonder what would happen if I quit looking and shut off the internet for a week.

You can come across projects from a family selling a passed away owner or life changes causing someone to unload things like moving or divorce.

There are tons of flattys posted on FB MP around here. Some priced reasonably and the majority over priced. But they are out there.

You know.....I do that too. Once you get the list made you begin to see what is and is not a good idea.

As someone with ADHD… It’s the fascination and interest in the new project. Once you get most of the parts together, it becomes less interesting, and my mind drifts on the other things and I’m unable to complete the project I was so fascinated with previously.
