Anyone here go to Penn State or drive through there? I possible job move came up, and while not ideal, it would get me closer to family which was the main goal. I have family in Philly and the Detroit area, so both are closer than Colorado.

I grew up in MI, so I know about the sun going away for months at a time during the winter, but I assume they would have less snow and warmer weather than where I grew up. While I enjoy all the sun in CO, when it is 85+ for months on end it is brutal being outside in the sun. I would not live in the actual town since there is Penn State there. Based on what I saw while I was in college, no way I would want my family exposed to that for 9 months out of the year. That is assuming college kids still go out and party and not just sit in their rooms and play video games.

I know there are people on here that have to live in PA, so what would I be getting myself into?

ETA: I would move out there and rent for ~4-6 months and the family would follow after. We dont want to pull my daughter our of school.

Cost of housing in state college is high. I have a close friend working there for a few years on a project. His goal was to buy a small modest place. 1-2 bedroom then keep it and rent it out after his 3rds there. He couldn’t find a place, 6 figure guy, and is renting at an obnoxious amount. My advice is look around for your self.

Just remember my cousin lives there and had a very similar issue as above. Great job but could afford more than a way too small appt for a family of 4

It seems like there are plenty of houses in the outlying area under 450k and in the short time rent in 1200ish for a 1br/1ba appt.

I would go out there and see the area for myself before taking the job.

Used to work with a shop in Bellefonte pretty often, like 20 min away from State College. Can't speak to current property values, but it was a pretty nice area, quickly got into rural and hills outside of towns.

Expensive college town.
Weekends are crazy during football season home games.
Commuting in from a hour away sucks, but less expensive housing.

I was born not far from there ( Loch Haven ) where my grand parents lived and lived there for 3 years and visited the area often as a kid but they both died 50 years ago and never went back . i liked it there as a kid but thats about all i could tell you .

I got nothing

but went there to party on the campus in 1980 with friends
State College was the only town in PA that allowed the beer stores to be open on Sundays.
they had to be closed on Wednesday in exchange for that.

State college it's about an hour north of me, straight up 22/322...I don't frequent that area. But there are plenty of outlier towns around it that are affordable. Even if you do find a place north/South, as long as it's close to 22/322 USUALLY isn't too bad of a run. I'd hate to invite more people here... But if about an hour drive is within reason for you, check out Perry county.

Been there many times in the 80's, usto be a thing called Briarwood Bash, most awesome party I've ever attended, all doors open, keg in every living room, vending trucks on every corner, cops directing traffic, wild times...

Sorry, I live 3 hrs. away so my input would be invalid.

Did spend some money at the Rathskeller bar.
It was the place to be before it got sold.
