What are the recommendations for one? ive always loved the Benelli M1 and id like to have a similar one to my 26" barrel i use for quail hunting.

But i cant help but think the answer to my question is the Beretta 1301. am i overlooking something? Ive got some slick and very useful pumps, but i think for a HD shotgun, a deadnuts reliable auto is the way id like to lean.

Siaga 12 with a few magazines loaded ready to go.

mag fed shotgun doesnt really make sense to me on a HD gun. too much to go wrong fumbling around in the dark (possibly). With an auto, lock the carrier back and a full mag tube, all you have to do is hit the mag release and its ready to go. or have one sitting in the chamber. mag fed seems like an unnecessary step.

I borrowed a 1301 for turkey season this year. It is a really, really nice shotgun. Soft shooting and reliable.

Why not AR? Or did Ole Joe tell you need a pump shotgun?? :flipoff2:

I have a nice Tactical 870 pump I have as backup but I’ll follow this thread. I like the pistol grip setup but still a pump.

I have a homebrew Mossberg 930 that I set up for 3 gun, prior to the release of the JM Pro models(might be a ancient thread on Pirate or Brian Enos). I can straight up John Wick with that gun. I run reduced recoil buck and slugs, that I carefully tested for reliability and accuracy(Shot a shit ton of options, huge differences in accuracy). Mine is a little shorter at 22" than the JM Pro. I had the barrel chopped, forcing cone lengthened for improved patterns and reduced recoil, and then threaded for chokes tubes. Opened up the loading port, fiber optic rifle sights, extended mag, oversized safety, etc. Sure I'm missing some stuff. I ran it trouble free in matches for 2 seasons, before work started interfering with my play time. It would be one deadly beast if needs be.

Personally, I've been on a shorty kick. Subguns/"pistols" and bullpups. My current bed gun is a tricked out Keltec KS7. It's petite and I have it stuffed with a shit ton of mini buck and slugs. Choke tube adapter, tuned trigger, RDS, light, etc...

Either way, I'd hate to be on the receiving end.

FWIW, no matter the choice I'd recommend finding some reduced recoil or mini's that it likes. Nobodies gonna miss that 200fps, and it makes it way easier to shoot well. I hate, hate, hate, patterning hot 3" loads, especially out of that little KS7! (gonna try and take a yote and turkey for kicks with the KS7. No pun intended!)

SBS just kills it for me. thats a hell of a shotgun, but im not going to play the NFA game with something like that. not over 3.5" of shotgun barrel.

Yeah that’s a dumb reason to go through their process. Just order a suppressor first to open Pandora’s box. Then it’s a quick downhill slide to several more cans, SBR’s, SBS’s, etc. Might as well at that point, right? :flipoff2:

High Standard 10. heavy but short, no good for leftys.

I have a Remington Sportsman (cheap version of the 1100) autoloader, 18" barrel, 7 shot extension, Choate pistol grip stock, cheapo green laser sight if the sound of a round being chambered doesn't get the point across that I am serious. I have had it for about 35 years, good reliable shotgun. I have two other barrels one for birds, one for trap.

I have a schedule A in my trust that says Ive been in that game for a long while

I think the big issue is spending the same amount of money as you would if you bought an 18" version of the same gun without the hassle.

I have a Beretta 1301 Comp that shoots great. Never missed a beat. Running a Lancer CF mag tube. Would definitely recommend.

That being said there are a lot of great semi shotguns for home defense:
FN SLP; a bunch of Benellis; Remington versamax comp;

I've heard mixed reviews on the JM pros.

That 590 A1 retro is dead sexy.

Standard Mfg DP-12.

Stack it with slugs and buck shot for the win. If someone manages to make it past your front door at that point, yer dead anyway.

Its a baaaad bitch! :grinpimp:

The DP 12 is a heavy as hell gimmicky as hell overpriced terrible gun.

It's also not semi auto, so it doesn't belong in this thread.

I do believe he mentioned that he wanted something reliable.

I was looking at Siaga and after talking to some folks that have owned them and doing some reading it seems like the general consensus is that they are finicky as hell and need to have a good bit of money sunk into them to run correctly.

From what I have read the VEPR 12 is much better platform in that style shotgun.

If you want to shoot the cheapest light trap loads, that's definitely the case.

The VEPR is better, but they still don't recommend shooting light loads less than 1 OZ. It's gas system is self regulating. They are also pistol gripped and run a non crappy stock from the importer, where the saigas had to be converted.

If you modify them to shoot the light cheap shells then you will be overgassed on high brass, but that's just how it goes.

My solution to this is to spend just a bit more for 1 1/8 OZ slightly higher velocity shells and not fight with it. When you spend around $1K for a shotgun, it's not going to break you to spend another dollar per box.

Browning auto 5 is the only autoloading shotgun that runs 100% for me.

my current go-to is a remmy 11 that I got for 108 out the door with a bulged barrel
cut it down to 18.5" got the 2 piece carrier for the speed-loading, and stuck half an A-5 magnum friction set in it

Also got a light 12 with a smooth slug barrel with rifle sights and an extension, synth stock set on it, can't find the pictures I took a decade ago.
Siaga 12 with a few magazines loaded ready to go.
mine does not run anywhere near reliable enough
Pretty much everyone has the same experience, you do a bunch of things that do make it better, but they never really run 100%

its a great gun. had a nice short Savage 720 that was a decent gun, but i dont think id trust my life to it.

Mine is reliable as heck but I spend a lot of time deburring and polishing the carrier and related contact points when I converted it to regular AK configuration. Only money was an after marker gas puck. It does like high brass hulls with power loads like XX

Only thing that is an issue is ovaling/squishing the top cartridge with the mag stored on a closed bolt from mag spring tension. So I do not keep a mag in it. But the 12 round drum lives right next to it...:grinpimp: Great fun at the range!

I am partial to the Saiga, just because they were the first. But, objectively, the VEPR 12 is better at just about everything.

Had a Saiga, that I had done a ton of work to, converted, ACE folding stock, piston, different forend and polished action.

A friend offered me enough to buy it and I got a VEPR to replace it, haven't modified the VEPR at all. Just put a russian style flash hider on it and shoot it.

To me the VEPR just feels more like an AK in how it handles and feels. Hasn't missed a beat, but I don't shoot it a ton. The saiga would run great on most everything except really cheap low brass loads with 1oz or less shot load. It was flawless shooting 1 1/8 oz #6 loads. Had 2 friends guns preform exactly the same. My brothers gun would run anything out of the box. To me it wasn't worth the hassle of pulling the gas block to drill the holes larger, or add another one.

Saiga mags are definitely cheaper than the Russian Vepr mags.
