I've been looking to get into shotgun reloading to reload nontox for pheasant hunting. Given the supply constraints of everything I am having issues finding load data for supplies that I can get.

Last fall I was at the gun shop and they had Fio 616 primers so I bought 1,000 and they had longshot and titewad so I bought some of that. I've found some load data for these primers but its hard to find. So can I safely substitute these primers for other in loads?

Hodgdon lists this recipe
Hull: 2.75 Remington Nitro
Shot: 1.25 oz bismuth
Powder: Longshot
Primer: CCI 209M (28.4 gr powder) 10,500 PSI
Fed 209A (26.9 gr powder) 10,000 PSI
Rem 209P (28.8 gr powder) 10,700 PSI
WIN 209 (29.7 gr powder) 10,100 PSI

So can I safely use a Fio 616 primer with 28 gr of longshot in that recipe?

Yes, you can substitute primers. Need to be more worried about diameter of the primer than the brand name LOL

One brand will fit tight, swapping brands could cause them to fall out.

One brand may be hottest in some loads, but not hottest in others. So it is confusing. Sticking to a recipe is great if you can.

You load based on the weight of the shot, not so much the type of shot.

1.25 oz is 1.25 ounce whether it bismuth, lead, copper, slug or rock salt.

You won't notice the difference in primers. Your shotgun might. Depending on what gun you are shooting staying below 11,000 psi is safe.

if you are shooting a pre 1955 shotgun then you need to be below 9,000 I believe.

Your powder drops will not always be the same, and you will not be able to get exactly 28.8 or whatever it calls for. Your bushings will end up with something like 27 or 29.5 so error on the side of caution.

If you pattern your loads typically you will find they pattern better than store bought loads. So even if slower you are better off.
